Planning on making my own bow

Hello all.
This will be my first time attempting such a thing (or any real wooden project). I found a few websites, telling me how to do it and well it seems do-able, albeit it'll be a fair bit of work.
I've encountered a bit of a problem however, as the wood listed (American Red Oak), the local joinery has none of. So, I was hoping some of yew (Hee hee hee see what I dun there) might able to give me a few tips on what would to use.
Also, if you have any tips on what to do, they would be greatly appreciated.

Try the following forums - they're the best there are in relation to everything about bowmaking (especially selfbows):
http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/ (Archery section)
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php (need to register in order to see the pictures - and they're worth it!)

If you have any questions - feel free to ask!

Making a Self Bow myself. Ash is a very good wood if you are making a flat bow. Its also very easy to find here in Ireland. If you are going to use more than one wood, English Yew would do the job nicely.
Fibreglass tape is a good alternative to Sinew if you are going to put a backing on the bow.
