Macbook (early 2008) battery issues

Anyway I've bought a new charger from the good lads in China and it's operating again, however the battery is no longer charging and I'm getting a "replace now" message beside the battery…

Hi!

I've had some problems with my Mac over the last few months but it turns out it was the charger which was slowing dying on me.
Anyway I've bought a new charger from the good lads in China and it's operating again, however the battery is no longer charging and I'm getting a "replace now" message beside the battery indicator. I've had a look around the net and tried an SMC reset and PRAM reset but alas the battery still won't charge.
My Mac has been out of action for about 3 months with these issues but the battery wasn't that old and only had around 250 cycles. It really shouldn't be dead right? Is there any other way around that anyone knows of to bypass the SMC and at least get the Mac to attempt to charge the battery?

My original batter died a few years ago and after that I bought one from ebay which ended up warping quick fast so I bit the bullet and bought my current official one.
This Mac is no longer my primary computer though so don't particularly want to splash out on another official expensive apple battery.
Is there any 3rd party batteries out there anyone could recommend if there's no solution to fixing my current one?
Any help is much appreciated.
