Donnybrook /Irishtown have a Berlingo AFIR with just the stripes but no lights , and I've seen a 07 marked up Mondeo with both roof bar and 'unmarked' blues on dash/rear hi-level brake light - not taking any chances :)

Apparently, according to a fellow i was talking to, in Drogheda there was a jeep and 'small van' (connect?) hanging around the town of late.

The van was normal and marked, but the jeep, which is white, had the single stripe down the side, GARDA on the doors, and that was it. No lightbar and no GARDA on the bonnet. Apparently the two (van and jeep) were travelling together.

Guy isn't really much of a bullsh*tter, so I'd tend to believe him, but I've never heard of anything like this before.

There were mounted (horsey) Gardai in the town recently, for school visits and such, so I thought maybe it was their jeep, but then the van being with them doesn't make sense, and I'm fairly sure I've seen the jeep that brings the horses around and it's fully marked up, anyway.

    Anyone got any idea?

That jeep is a Dog Unit vehicle. It has numerous hidden led lights all around it.

(also, that lightbar on the recently posted Garda car is atrocious looking. If they want to put writing on the light bar, why not just use the same lightbar that goes on the RSU Volvos instead of that horrible lego-block styled one?)

Thats the dog unit. Theres a photo of it, either on here or ESF, I can't remember which (think it was ESF)

Anyone have a picture of that, then, by any chance? I can't find it. I don't believe I've ever seen a marked Garda vehicle missing a lightbar before (I know the dog unit use the Ford Connects, though, but they're fully marked up).

    Just got that, Cheers.

Have never seen that before. Although it does have more markings than I was expecting (friend obviously didn't get much of a look at the back/front of it).

Is there any reason why it lacks a lightbar?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,451 ✭✭✭CharlieCroker

Mainly cos it Doesn't really need one.

Well by the same logic neither do any of the fleet? (except perhaps community police cars as they're supposed to be more about creating/maintaining a Garda presence?)

Just seems odd that someone somewhere along the way said "ye know what, I don't think a lightbar is a good idea on this", when every other marked vehicle has one.

It would be interesting to see a couple of traffic corps vehicles with this scheme. ie. Marked up but no lightbar.

Kind of a low profile look, seems to work in a lot of other countries.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,451 ✭✭✭CharlieCroker

They don't need it because most of their OP's are pre planned and as such, aren't rushing to jobs as often as the regular/traffic

Also they try to avoid using the siren because it upsets the dogs.

A fair whack of their vehicles had no proper lightbar

Parhaps the vehicle was originally unmarked and was marked up at a later date. Therefore a roof lightbar wouldn't be needed when the vehicle still had all its lights from it's unmarked days.

Nope it's brand new, with bumper leds etc. Probably cost saving as a lightbar wouldn't be strictly necessary

I wonder why HSE Intermediate Care Ambulances weren't fitted with top light bars when they seem to be fitted with just about every other emergency lighting.

Heard, or read, that the LAPD converted the bulk of their unmarked cars (not specialised units like surveillance but most general detective units) to these slick tops in the 90's. I believe it was a PR stunt, basically trying to trick the general public into thinking there was more police on the street then there actually was. Wasn't too popular with the rank and file and was dropped after a few years.

Hasn't that been happening here aswell? plenty of the unmarked cars have disappeared, got liveried up to try give the impression that new vehicles had been bought? hasn't fooled most of the public here either!

That must be where they got the lightbar for that TC Focus:

True enough. Though in the LAPD, the slicktop cars would still be assigned to detective units, not transferred to regular units like here.

White unmarked Sorrento seen outside HQ in Harcourt St. Great place for spotting the 'odd' models.

Meanwhile, in Germany - they can still do 180mph+ (unrestricted top speed models) WITH the lightbar !!!

No Guarantee that every unmarked you see in the square is a garda vehicle, unless you see gardai getting into/out of it.

That's only publicity. Show me a picture of an operational M5 and I'll believe you.

Discreet lighting was chosen to make them stand out more from Emergency Ambulances.
They have a dash light which is much cheaper than the high light bar and also cheaper grill/side lights.
We have 2x 2012 ICV's and 2x 2012 ICV's in my station and I've never seen them on lights. No need for the extra expense

I know that, but anything such as Superbs etc with 'Exempt' tax discs and concealed blues are - the rest are .....

    The roof bars are terrible.

No worries about aerodynamics as they never get above 50mph anyway with all the Honda 50's blocking their path :D

Is that a silver new model Mondeo in your last post Rebekah Whining Scalpel?

Haven't seen one yet if it is, any pics of the whole car?

  • Posts: 14,344 ✭✭✭✭ Jillian Tender Tightrope

    Hi Charlie,

It's an 08, so not really 'new' unfortunately (though I'm lead to believe the station will get something else, too, so hopefully something with a '12 reg).

Only got a quick look at the car today, but it seems to be kitted out with a bit of camera gear. Also there's no "GARDA Confidential" writing at the rear (just the number on it's own).

Fine looking car all the same and a welcome addition to the station, I'm sure.

That's one of the unmarked cars taken back by the depot to be marked up. Rebekah Whining Scalpel you said there camera inside of it would make me think it's traffic but no battenburgs?
