Hi, Looking for suggestions for a new car.

I'm looking for (in this order) a safe, economical as in 32-40 mpg, saloon type family car. Nice looking would be a bonus. Just me, the wife and one little baby (so far). Currently driving a 1.4 307 and want something a bit bigger and more powerful.

Am 36, male, I do about 10-15k miles per year. Would like to spend between 6-9k, could stretch a little if the right motor came along. Drive in Dublin traffic, commute about 20 miles per day. Then a few trips on the motorway each month. Has to be at least 1.6L, would prefer 1.8. 2L at a push.

Mazda 6 1.8 might be a little too big for my needs, but this is leading the pack at the moment. Love the looks and seems that you can get a fair bit of bang for your buck. Also, seems to be very reliable. 1.8 S40's, 1.6 Jetta's, 1.6 Octavias and Quasqai's are also on my list to check out.

What do you think of these?

Also, anyone know of anything to look out for on these? are they belt or chains?

    Thanks for any help

They're only €481 tax, not what you'd call high tax really. Those petrol 6s are good value in my opinion

Hate it? I love it! Any known problems with these? What's the mpg? :D

Thanks Colm. Gonna try to get a look at the one in Dublin, prefer the SE in Cork but very busy with work at the mo and traveling is a pain. strange but most other similar 6's seem to be in Cork also.

Honda Civic saloon is worth a look at too, the 1.8 is very economical and has decent go with 140bhp too:

Safe, Reliable to an extent, economical enough, 1.8L and nice looking? Id say a Volvo S40 as it really ticks everything... The S60's are an option aswell although they are more expensive, but bigger.

    S40

Ya id definitely buy privately... That one seems to be very expensive for no apparent reason.

S60 is very nice, Looks a bit bigger than the Mazda 6 though, which is kind of top of my size scale.

S40 looks great, any idea what the boot space is like? Can you drop a pram, travel cot and a couple of bags in there handy enough? (Amazing how your piorities can change in a few months :))

Not too fussed in the Civic, low miles is tempting though!

    Thanks for the suggestions.

S40 boot isn't great. It's not a big car in general.

    Hi, got a Mazda 6 at the weekend. 70k miles, 08, 7.5k.

Love it so far. Seems pretty reasonable on petrol, very comfy.

Thanks for the other suggestions anyway
