Actually I thought it was trying to be an historical epic like Gladiator, but failing miserably.

    You are joking right.
300 and gladiator are worlds apart except for sandles and swords. Two completely different movies. 300 was going for something different to gladiator.

slightly OT, It's intiresting that a lot of films that are regarded as masterpieces now (overrated or not) did fairley miserable in cinemas, Blade Runner, The Thing, The Shawshank Redemption, Citizen Kane.

Some films just didnt appeal at the time of release or the marketing of the movie was poor. Some just dont suite a cinema going audience.
It would be very hard to convince people to go see a movie about a guy sent to prison in the 1920s. (Shawshank) A bit of a hard sell. Still one of the best movies ever made though.
Shawshank was not brought out in the cinema's from what I remember.

It was. But didnt last too long.

i can remember shawshank being in the cinemas. One of the most poorly marketed films ever made....right down to the "too intelligent" title.

guys films are not just about marketing. first they need to be picked up then get a decent distributation deal .. only when achieved can some movies get the credit they deserve ,in the case of shawshank this gem of a movie yes complete gem.excellent camera work ,superb editing, never mind the plot ,depth of characters and acting.this gem did not have a lot of clout behind in but still made its mark .In the 1994 Academy Awards the movie was nominated for seven awards (Best Picture, Best Actor – Morgan Freeman, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound) but, did not win a single one.after all this was the year of forrest gump ... personally i rate the shawshank as a piece of cinema magic

The reason I picked this film was that it is (like most US mainstream) sentimental mush with a totally risible Hollywood ending, (escaping from a high security prison to a tropical island with pretty girls! come on grow up) I find european cinema much more satisfying if your over 12 yrs old, recent examples of excellence being Hunger and Badar Meinhof complex. I can't believe intelligent people i have met rate it.

You sir will find that you are:

Hollywood produces some of the most thought provoking cinema around. Sure there are numerous European films which surpass their American counterparts but there;s just as much European trash as there is American.

oh, won't worry buddy, i was easily an hour and a half into it when i took the DVD out.

You still havent seen the film though.

You can say the first 90 minutes of JB is overrated (if you can find somebody who specifically rates the first 90 minutes) but you say its overrated and expect to have your opinion respected if you have'nt even seen the film.

a few things mate, 1: your video had no audio, 2: I hate Scrubs its totally overrated, 3: American films in general have to have a positive ending even indie ones by and large, 4: happy christmas

that's a rediculous statement. assuming by some miracle that the last half hour was somehow magnificent, it still wouldn't detract from the utter crapness of what preceeded it. honestly, a person can tell by the tone and style of the film what it's going to be like. and lets face it, it's more to do with QT than the quality of the flm itself. the fact that i had to turn the damn thing off speaks volumes about what i think the film anyway

so kindly take your facist attitude and blow it out your arse;)

Why is it a ridiculous statement? You have not seen the whole film, therefore you cannot comment on the whole film. I would've thought that would be simple logic.

honestly, a person can tell by the tone and style of the film what it's going to be like. and lets face it, it's more to do with QT than the quality of the flm itself.

So just because its a QT film you thought it was bad:rolleyes:

The argument here is not about what you thought of the part of the film that you saw. Chances are the last half of the film would not have changed your mind but you cant watch half a film and expect your comments to be respected. Thats all Im saying.
the fact that i had to turn the damn thing off speaks volumes about what i think the film anyway

Think is says more about the viewer tbh
so kindly take your facist attitude and blow it out your arse;)

No country for old men - you couldn't pay me to sit through that again! Waste of 9euro!

    Tomb raider - absolutely dire!
    Mr & Mrs Smith
    Legally Blonde
Superbad - just didn't think it was very funny

Wedding Crashers - was better than above mainly due to Isla Fisher
    Vanilla Sky - yawn
    Casino Royale

    1. Audio working fine for me, you may have the audio turned down.
2.I'm not a fan of Scrubs either but the dialogue hammers home my point.
    3. Most European cinema has a happy ending also, in fact the large majority of films the world over end on a happy note.
    4. Happy Christmas to you too and to all a good night.

Oh I am sure that you can find your fair share of unhappy American movies: No Country for old Men, for instance ( which I didnt really like). The Third Man, which I did like, are exmamples. There are many many more.. Some depressing. Mystic River just springs to mind.

Happy endings are not really a problem with American classics like Some Like it Hot and Its a Wonderful Life - to name but two classics of American cinema.

Even the Cahiers the Cinema - the bible of Euro-filim snobbery has 50 Anerican movies in it's top 100.

Welcome to the world of European movies - glad to see you've discovered the Germans are in fine form these days, but dont diss America. No serious film critics do.

    Shawshank
because it rips off so many older prison movies
if you only watch one prison movie shawshank is good, but if you have seen a lot of the old B&W classics there is lot you've seen before in this one

    The Dark Knight.

From all that I have heard people say about this film over the past few months I have now come to accept that you should never ever trust peoples' opinion about film before you see it yourself.

I had great hopes for the Dark Knight and the film did not even come close to living up to them. Nothing of interest happened until the last half hour, the plot about the mob money and that Chinese guy was extremely weak. And the scene where they were transporting the DA where there was five minutes of nothing but explosions, bazookas and "I didn't sign up for this" talk from a cop would have been enough for me to walk out if I was at the cinema. This movie was just like every other Batman movie although whether it is as good as the others I'm not sure. I'd have to watch them again.

This was essentially a film where nothing happened. It's just another CGI effects 2 hours (an hour too many at that).

The truth is, if Heath Ledger hadn't died during shooting, this movie would have got the same amount of attention as the "Batman Begins" and people would certainly not be calling it the best film ever.

It's ok and I can see how it would appeal to a 12 or 13 year old lad. But it is nowhere near the best film ever. I'm still shocked about how people went on about it.

I suppose I should mention the 'Joker'. He was alright, no better than Jim Carey as the riddler (albeit less annoying and weird).
There are plenty of actors who could have played him aswell if not better.
