I find it quietly ironic that the weekend the game that truly advances the connectivity of PSN is released the whole ****ing system goes down.

The cake most certainly is a lie.

The SixAxis seem to have some info, confirmed by Digital Foundry.

Seems PS3 CFW hackers broke into PS3 developer PSN and downloaded a load of stuff from PSN for free.
Seems like they got access to PSN login servers from there and deleted the servers & backups.

This thread is going to die so quickly when the network gets back up!

Um, that's usually what happens to a thread about something not working, when that something starts working.

Why would people continue to discuss the PSN downtime when it is no longer down.

it's not that dramatic Im afraid.., users of rebug cfw, myself included, were able turn our retail ps3's into debug ps3's. this gave a lot of extra options in settings, one of them is to change the network you connect to, to sp-int, the ps3 dev network. the trick was then to sign up a new account, you were given access to top up your psn wallet with "fake" money - unlimited, people abused this and were downloading **** loads of stuff from psn, i have rebug installed, i've played on spint, but i can honestly say i wasnt involved in any of the "stealing"
Seems like they got access to PSN login servers from there and deleted the servers & backups.
i wouldnt believe a word of this,

sony are trying to stop people getting on with rebug cfw i'd imagine, why they havent banned people myself included i dont understand, people should have their cfw's if they want, and do what they like, but there should be no place for pirates and cheats on psn, so instaban, ...which they have failed to do

I'm using this as a way to get back into all the single player games I've forgotten (Batman, Borderlands, Uncharted etc) so it's not really affecting me at all tbh

Must also finally finish off ME2 this weekend

I'm enjoying some intense fighting on MW2 on the xbox. I do have a PS3 and was playing uncharted 2 online all the time. But there is a new gun in town. Especially with the balls-up of PSN.

the issue was an external one, there was a security issue that was noted by sony so they turned off access to psn to plug the holes. the only side of it that's up for debate is how far the security breach actually got, there were some reports saying credit card and personal information may have been compromised, but sony are saying thats not the case

    Update:
We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available
