I understand that but IMO there are too many bulletins on all channels.

I had the misfortune of sitting through the whole show today too

Listening to a Rock, Paper, Scissors game on radio was a low-point alright.

Can't believe the rules had to be cited for some listeners

the whole show made me feel like that nut who is trying to stay awake for 10 days :p

Anyone esle find the fix it friday slot annoying now that Jenny and Ray are a settled down, official 'couple'. Their over-flirtatious/over-happiness with life/teenage giggling bugs me. And they never fail to bring in some angle of their personal lives which is totally irrelevant....annoying.

    Used to be way better.

Oh and Will annoys me aswell....a non-funny know it all who knows too much about cleaning and other irrelevant things that are uninteresting.

Get onto Phantom, good Djs and good music. Although WAAAAAAYYY too many traffic slots that nobody listens to anyway

According to the recent JNLR figures most people with disagree with this thread. D'Arcy is one of the few shows on the up.

I do think the quality of the programme has suffered a bit recently e.g the ESB metre reading campaign?! Who gives a ****.

Still, the bit with some girl whose dream it was to sit on Willie O'Dea's knee and stroke his mustache was hilarious.

oh aye - when it's good, it's comedy gold. I only heard that bit on the last Word being replayed, and had to pull the car over i was laughing so much at it. I think the problem though is that there is a definite move on the part of Ray, perhaps in spite of himself, to be a bit more
    a) sanctimonious
    b) luvvy-duvvy
    c) joe-duffy-lite
    d) all of the above

Back in the day, the show was completely flying by the seat of its pants, and the inherent charm of it was the d'arcy naivity all the way. Now it seems to have a lost a little of that innocence, the stuff that made it fun.

I'm possibly gonna get flayed for this as well, but the endless campaigning is getting on me wick as well. Dammit, they used to do it on That's Life on the BBC and it didn't bloody sit well with me then, either...

of course, the counter-argument is that if shows that aren't listened to by a lot of people don't do these things, then the potential audience for the campaign falls...to which i say phoooey...bring back the funny old Ray D'arcy show...

I used to enjoy his show up until about 7 months ago, I dont really hear it anymore but have to agree its gone seriously downhill, from what I have heard of it.

The texts he reads out after someone performs has always irked me. I never liked the way the texters made out that they were his mates.

    You're kidding, right...?

I agree about the smugness of the Ray Show, but it is still fairly listenable imo

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭SprostonGreen

Another thing about these saps who text saying they've got goosebumps listening to the song, or oh my God Ray thats fantastic. Well if its so fcuking fantastic, sit back and listen, nevermind poxy texting.

Also fix it friday, why dont those ejets use the f cuking internet to find their cow pattered butter dishes and such like?

    Feel the love Ray.

The show is still the best in Irish radio imo, very funny very informative and can take the piss out of himself, Sean Moncreiffs show is basicilly Ray D'arcy on speed.

Nope that would be the sports show on newstalk. It works on so many levels.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭Badabing

    What sports show?

I think the comment about Jenny Kelly above is disgraceful and should be deleted. Jenny is a lady and of a far greater quality person than Gray Darcy. But I totally agree Darcy is a total b*llix and doesn't deserve his listenership. He has no personality and looks about fifty years old. So grumpy on air. He insults his guests and lets his moods take over interviews, comments and musical choice. And he so needs texts to present, unlike natural performers like GRyan, Dempsey and Will Leahy. If it wasn't for Martin Maguire he wouldn't make it on radio. Plus did you see that Ian dempsey row story in the Sindo a few weeks ago? Dempsey was able to lie that there was no arguement only Darcy is such an anal w**ker that he admitted they hate each other!!! LOL... Jenny, jenny, jenny...

I thought you were talking about Gerry Ryan with that paragraph! And it's radio, for feck's sake.....what does it matter what age someone looks ? Mind you, if you automatically assume that someone looks "about fifty" just because their hair is grey, then you've some learning to do.......I hope I look like that when I'm 50!

Facts to back up those sentences, please ? You're coming across like Jenny Kelly's previous boyfriend, complete with chip on shoulder about Ray.....

I saw the Sindo article, and even allowing for the rumour, lies and spin that the Sindo normally print, I still can't remember anything about them hating each other. How do you know that Dempsey lied, and since when does "we're not best buddies and don't hang out" become "we hate each other" ?

Quit stirring, or else back it up with something real.

Just listened to Tom Dunne filling in for Ray.
What a breath of fresh air.
He's effortlessly funny and involves the rest of the crew so much better.

The whole atmosphere was much more lighthearted and free flowing

Kinda like the way Rays program used to be before he read "So you want to be Gerry Ryan" by Gerry Ryan

I couldn't agree more with that - it's a sad state of affairs when I'm delighted that Ray is off and Tom is filling in for him.

I used to be a major fan of the show, but these days I leave the radio off and listen to music instead.

eugh! no way, when i heard dempsey that tom was filling in for ray i was devasted! toms voice is so boring (fair enough he IS funny) so i turned it off straight away...id rather listen to Joe 'mutha****in' Duffy than Tom Dunne

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭patrickc

tom and will doing that cif quiz were hilarious

As much as I dont like Tom Dunne, he was far more tolerable than Darcy. The music was the same old shíte, but at least he wasnt on a pointless crusade or ranting ad nauseum about what annoyed him over the weekend.

Are you talking about "off the ball" ? If so, it proves that people have different tastes.....having heard about this before newstalk went nationwide, I tuned in the first week and haven't tuned in since.....

I normally try and avoid personal digs and presenters and shows, since each presenter is doing their best and usually have their own audience, so all I'll say is that "off the ball" is "definitely not for me".

P.S. LMAO at the "how to be gerry ryan" book by gerry ryan comment. I don't personally think Ray is gone quite that bad, but I can kinda see where you're coming from, despite still being a partial fan of Ray's show :D

This thread is one of the best reads I've had in a long time. I really hope it is kept alive with daily reports of how sh*t the show is. I will personally post something here every time he says something to annoy me. Until now I thought everyone who listened to the show was an 'Oh my God Ray.. texter'.

The worst point of the show for me was the whole 'Random act of Christmasnessness' - it made my skin crawl, even typing that word is doing the same now. (I think he's trying a random act of kindness thing soon   .)

Someone mentioned earlier about him reading out the texts; They're nearly fighting each other to give the best review ("That was brill", "best ever", "pure class" are regulars)..., it's his monotone voice when reading them that gets me. The worst type of text is the one that begins with 'Oh my God I'm in tears here...so touching......so sad....' when the f*ckin subject isn't even sad!!

Will's time is up - being rude to callers because they don't agree with his cleaning techniques or pathetic pastimes. Who doesn't know the rules of Rock, Paper, Scissors? Even after they explained he was too smug to say he understood. And his laugh....

Tom Dunne is fannnnntastic - he just has a genuine sense of humour, he's not trying too hard and doesn't ever get sucked into discussing serious issues. I'm praying he replaces D'Arcy.

D'Arcy is a pipsqueak and should be put in a corner with a pair of those anti-fart pants over his head.

    Ahhh.....catharsis.....

    Yeah I agree 100%.
It's not that I don't like Ray D'Arcy, I just think his show has kinda lost it's way. It just seems so regimented and formulated.

Tom Dunne standing in was brilliant, a real breath of fresh air. It was like having a really cool school teacher standing in while you're regular teacher was out sick.

No doubt Ray will be back on Monday moaning about the crap weather for the last two weeks and lamenting about the quality time he's spent with his daughter. Did you know that he has a new daughter? No? Probably because he doesn't talk about it that much!

His show is still alright but he needs to lighten up a bit.
