Once you take out insurance within 2 years of cancelling cover, you won't lose your bonus. However, if you are holding on to the car, your plan might be the best option to keep fire/theft on it.

If/when you go off a company scheme and back to your own car, can't you get a statement from your employer's insurance company saying that you had a company from this date to that, that you had (hopefully) no claims and won't that allow you to get some class of an NCB when taking out a policy in your own name?
