I applied for this course through 'Springboard' and was accepted. I don't have a background in Accounting but I want some exposure to it before I embark on it in a career. I think this course might give me a flavour of what accounting is about and may improve my chances of getting a training contract if I chose to progress from fund accounting.

If you don't mind me asking, how would you rate this course in terms of value and career prospects?

    Thanks in advance

You mention you have a backround in accounting...do you have a qualification in it or an already existing degree? There is lots of work available in fund accounting at the moment, if you have either of these things then I would be lookng to go directly into work rather than do this ocurse for a year.

Just to be clear I have no knowlegde of this course but have 13 years experience in FA.

sorry, mis-read the OP, thought you had an accounting background. Yeah you aren't likely to attract much attention without some grounding...the course may just be a good idea. Sorry can't provide anything more.

What kind of cash are you making if you don't mind me asking? What are the career prospects like? Would work experience in this environment go towards ACCA requirements?

I do alright, I am at VP level so get paid accordingly. The industry is the same as all others, work hard, be positive and enthusiastic and your prospects are good. There are small companies and big companies, bigger companies will have more chances of promotion, smaller promotions might mean more exposure to various aspects of the job.

Most companies pay towards professional accountancy, with a law degree you will be unlikely to get many exemptions to ACCA.

I would guess that inexperienced starters are getting between 26-28k.

26-28k is nothing to be sniffed in this day and age. If there are prospects to carry a the ACCA exams, all the better!

Hi Ardeehey, can you get into FA with a degree from a discipline other than accounting/finance/business? If it can be demonstrated that you have good knowledge of accounting principles?

There's no plain yes or no answer to that......all depends on the minimum criteria laid out by each company but I would think it unlikely now with so many people taking finance/accounting related courses. Most HR teams wouldn't let them through...unless it was a degree in math or possibly engineering, accounting principles are one thing but having hands on experience is another.

I guess there's no harm in me giving it a shot, especially with a good higher maths LC grade. Sure, they can only say no or ignore me, but if I don't apply I definitely won't get anything!
