Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Cheaper Satellite kit than Maplin easy

    Why I hate maplin.

    F-plugs http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?moduleno=10447
    £1.99 each or in blackpool cork thats Euro 3.65 each yes that right

    Now if you shop at dastv.co.uk they are £0.10 each. ok so the delivery is 6.50 but if you are getting cable already then the shipping is free so maplin is 20 times more expensive in the UK and 32 times more expensive in Ireland for this one item.



    twin Satellite cable 100m

    maplin.co.uk £124 ( £2.49/m for less than 100) so 30m would cost you more than 100m delivered from dastv.co.uk. In Ireland its more like 20m. 20m is not a lot of cable, so if you want to pay 5 times or more the price go to Maplin.

    dastv.co.uk £71 delivered


    tx100 Satalite cable 100m

    dastv.co.uk £43 delivered
    maplin.co.uk comparable cable £159

    Another example is :A SD freesat box is 55 Euro in the UK at argos, curries etc but in Maplin in Ireland its 105 Euro.


    There is nothing cheaper in maplin. I have no idea how the store is still open.

    They sell a null modem cable. (basically a serial cable with female connector at both end for 18 Euro). ebay 3 pounds delivered from the UK.

    PS: This site I found is not the cheapest. There are cheaper if you look around.

    OP- the moral of the story is- shop around. Maplins is handy when you're stuck for a specialist part- and aren't willing to wait for it to be shipped from Germany, the Netherlands, France or the UK (particularly audio related), but you do pay for this perceived ease of shopping there. The one thing I would say in Maplin's favour- is the staff tend to have a reasonable degree of knowledge about the products they sell- which is more than I can say for some of their competitors.......

    You'll even pick up F Plugs in Woodies (along with Sat grade cable), but I don't think thats the point the OP is making......

    twas a rant but 3.65 vs 10 pence for an f-plug

    www.cables.ie cheaper for 2 f-plugs shipped than maplin for 2

    also a site that I have bought stuff from before

    but Dwyers is seriously cheap for all those things, lot of trade shop there and its easy for consumers to buy there too, thats my point. F plugs and the like are about the 10c mark (give or take)

    Must say I have to disagree in the strongest from both my experiences and that of my friends, found Maplin staff to not have a clue what they are talking about.

    I have found them to be only adequate but the Assist. Manager knows his stuff and is a member here... (Not me btw)

    +1. Was in before looking for something I'd seen on their UK website, guy in the shop insisted that no such item existed.

    If they knew what everything was for as there is such a wide range of products then they could get a lot better job than maplin tbh.

    I can't say I know what 1/2 the stuff in the shop is for tbh

    Just look for electrical wholesalers that do trade and normal customers and give them a ring.

    Maplin are still in existence for a reason. They are used by people who don't really know what they are doing and need advice or people who need a part now.

    I must say I have used them a few times in the past when stuck for a part that would save me more by having it now than the extra I would pay for the part in Maplin.
