This is something that is reported worldwide as an inexplicable phenomenon. There have been threads on it way back. I forget the name used to refer to it I'm not sure if it's just called the hum :)

    hi minster gullible,

have often thought this aswel, somehow though im starting to think is it something else maybe that we cant see thats causing it,, windmills etc are more or less ruled out,, baffling though,,,

    hi oryx,

ya ive read bout that aswel while tryin to find info on it but the thing that bugs me the most is why only certain people hear it and more people cant,,,

also with regards to this humming sound my other half would experience a whistle and sometimes a strange sound in his ear from time to time,, has had his ears checked by docs they cant seem to find anything wrong,, and its not all the time,, most times this would happen either while hearing this hum sound or the day after,,

I have tinnitus and no physical cause was found for it. It can be hard to find the cause.

ive heard it before - sounds like a diesel van or something ticking over outside. sound is a complicated thing though so you'd never know what's really causing it. could be something very simple.

I've been hearing it for years but have noticed it getting particularly bad lately. I have a white noise app on my phone to drown it out.

it has gotten alot worse lately i understand when people say that there can be a number of reasons for someone hearing this kinda noise at night etc but something that i particularly no is when this noise was n a part of Kerry up the mountains one particular t.d pushed to get to the bottom of it,, he convinced the council to send an audiologist to the area and they did acknowledge that it is audio but they dont no what or where its coming from,, my other half heard it again last night and he said he was loud and seemed very close he said it sounded like a diesel vehicle was 2 doors down now obviously it wasn't,,

thanks again to everyone who has commented on this topic i definitely think the more people know of this the better to maybe get a little closer to knowing wtf it is ,,

I've wondered in the past if it could be the strong winds shooting along, for example, the gulf stream.

The hum is real. Only some people here it and it lasts for weeks then disappears. It's driving me crazy. I'm listening to it at the moment. I tried everything including turning off all the electricity in the house, driving around neighbourhood St 4 am but cannot find source. It's a worldwide problem that only started a few years ago.
It keeps me awake and if u can't hesr then don't try Coe once you do there no getting rid of it.
I only hear it at night.

can some of you make a video of it?

it seems that this is now waves coming from the earth, must find the link with explanation in it

The problem is that its more like a vibration and not picked up on recordings unless you have specialised equipment.

There is a video earlier on the thread of an attempt to record it.

A few different explantations not all paranormal.

It is most likely a venous hum. I can't post a link as i am a new user. but look it up

    Or a form of tinitus.

Or if you are that way inclined it could also be her vibration has being raised as her astral body is about the project

Both have been excluded already, and in more than one case.

Personally I'd be more inclined to believe in some kind of underground activity, like fracking or something related to aquifers, or even something to do with electromagnetic fields, man-made or otherwise.

The absolute last thing it is a form of tinitus. Its already been discounted several times.

I have to agree its definitely underground, and it gotten much louder over the last few days. Currently causing me to lose sleep as its much much louder than normal.

I have had tinnitus for years, I thought it was because I was a dj for over 10 years and the loud music had been the cause so I gave up dj'ing....Years later it turned out it was from sinusitis..
But yeah back to the hum - I hear it quite a lot in the evenings and morning times...
I found quite a lot about it on the tubez!

not the humming sound itself, but nasa reckon they know what makes those trumpet type sounds being heard worldwide - I reckon its the same idea for the hum: http://www.ryot.org/weird-trumpet-sounds-coming-sky-freaking-people-across-the-sky/935404
A spokesperson there said: “If humans had radio antennas instead of ears, we would hear a remarkable symphony of strange noises coming from our own planet.” Somehow this frequency is one we can catch.

Scientists call the sounds “tweeks,” “whistlers” and “sferics.”

The official continued: “They sound like background music from a flamboyant science fiction film, but this is not science fiction. Earth’s natural radio emissions are real and, although we’re mostly unaware of them, they are around us all the time.”

A U.S. Geological Survey scientist said that “small earthquakes below the surface can transmit sounds of the earth’s cracking crust.” He also said the sounds could come from meteors.

I wonder how far from a USAF base they are...

I haven't heard it in a couple of weeks. I used to hear it almost every morning. I thought it was an engine that was constantly running or a drone or something. My partner hears it too but it bothers me a lot more than it bothers him. Sometimes it gives me a headache, it almost always leaves me feeling uncomfortable or even irritable.

Yes, exactly, it has the same effect on me - it feels more like an underlying vibration that goes through you, it's horrid and there are times when it's there all the time and times when all's quiet again. To me it 'sounds' like a big concert loudspeaker connected to the mains but still 'idling', when nobody's playing yet. I hate it.

Howard Hughes Unexplained podcast this week had Barry Fitzgerald from Sligo talking about the hum. I hear it in Longford. I used to think it was the "Early Bird" diesel train idling as 5 a. m. is when it wakes me. Lately I have a new theory. I wonder if it is the transatlantic planes putting out flaps as they approach Ireland to slow down.

I am in heapstown sligo at the moment and this hum has kept me awake all night. I didnt hear it until about 9pm last night. I have stayed here lots of times and never heard it.

I was so looking forward to a peacefull night , because i live dublin 8 and have been hearing the exact same sound for a few months now and it keeps me awake most nights. Sometimes it stops and the silence is bliss. I used to only hear /feel it at night, but now its often 24/7.

It is the most annoying sound. Its a very low frequency, maybe 20-30hrz, and i am no convinved its underground and thr sound/frequency/vibration, comes in through the structure of the buildings.

When i step outside i rarely hear it
