Na Zimmers is a heartwarming documentary film about three elderly Irish people living in London who have found a new lease of life through their involvement in The Zimmers, a rock band whose members are reportedly the oldest in the world.

We follow Máire, Anne and John both in London where they now live and Dublin as they return back home for an appearance on the Late Late Show. They explain how their involvement with the group have meant that their elderly years away from home have turned out to be the best years of their lives.

A positive story about the Irish in London

Máire is a retired nurse from the Camus area of Connemara. In the early sixties at the age of 17, she left home and travelled to London. Máire believes that she was never been able to express herself. It's only now at 68 that she feels free to let her hair down with The Zimmers.

Anne is a retired nurse¹s assistant. She¹s also from Connemara but from the Lettermore area. She left home when she was 20 and worked for fifteen years in London. She then married and raised a family there. By nature she¹s quite shy but The Zimmers have gradually brought her out of her shell, so much so that her family and friends have noticed a huge difference in her since joining.

John, a retired construction worker, is originally from Arranmore Island and is still as Donegal as they come. He's out-going, funny and very proud of where he comes from. You can take the man out of Donegal, but you can't the Donegal out of a man like John. He loves the kudos that membership of The Zimmers brings. His involvement in the band has even opened up a hidden musical side in him. At 66 years of age, he has started to learn the guitar.

Directed by Ciarán Deeney and produced by Donal Haughey for Hawkeye Films, with an original soundtrack composed by Irene Buckley and edited by Cliodhna Nolan, Na Zimmers is a heart-warming film, providing intimate portraits of three Irish pensioners whose elderly years away from home have turned out to be the best years of them all. The documentary film is a positive slant on the Irish experience in London.
