Hello all, in recent years I have moved to laptop and onto tablets for most of my daily needs.

I'm in the process of setting up a home studio for (mainly) sound and video editing and lots has happened since tbe last time I bought a desktop (15 years ago) and a laptop (5 years ago).

I would also like, on occasion, to play some high end games. I was thinking of getting a PS4 but would prefer to put this into increasing tbe graphical capacity of this machine.

So I'm looking for a pretty powerful PC.

Am I better off buying the PC from Dell or a store? My last PC, which still works, was a HP?

I was in Harvey Norman and saw this PC...

Is this a good fit for what I need?

    this would be better.
See what program you use for video editing.recommended specs .

maybe choose the 4gig video card ,130 euro extra, gtx 745. click options.
The standard card is 2gig ram
if you think 2gig video ram is not enough .
i think the dell cpu is better than the one from harvey norman

would you not think about building one yourself.it really is the best and cheapest way and also very easy to do.if you head over to the building and upgrading section the lads there will help you choose a build to suit your needs

The spec sheet isnt even complete, just says "R9".

That looks like its probably €900-1000 worth of parts, for €1850.

That's far worse, a GTX745 is not a great gaming card.

According to the HP website the card is an R9 380, so what ED E said it correct, it's more or less a 1K PC sold at almost double that.

If you really want to spend that much and don't want to self build, this for example costs less and is way, way faster.

    Intel i7-4790k
    16GB Kingston HyperX FURY DDR3 1600MHz
    4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 980
    240GB Kingston V300 SSD
    2TB (2,000GB) SATA III 6Gb/s 7200rpm
    650W Corsair CS650 PSU

For anybody looking at a PC for processor intensive applications (like video, audio processing) then I recommend you check out the rating of the Exact processor on offer.

    the one mentioned above:
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4790K+%40+4.00GHz&id=2275

    And here's another i7 processor:
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2617M+%40+1.50GHz&id=871

    Huge difference!!

    Obviously?

One is a very high end four core/eight thread desktop processor operating at 4Ghz.

One is a dual core laptop processor from about 5 years ago running at 1.5Ghz.

You've comparing completely and radically different things. The only way someone could get that second processor is by buying a 2nd hand €200 laptop from Ebay.

get a pc with intel i7 cpu,
    at least 4 gig ram,
you can always put in more ram if its needed for video editing.

Op, you should look into building your own, seriously!

I have a mate who bought an AlienWare from Dell before that had an unbranded (crap) PSU inside that blew after a few months. Outrageous stuff altogether! The guy would have gotten a better computer for less had he built it himself.

You'll get all the help you need on here regarding spec. And i'm sure you'll find somebody to build it for you for a few quid if you don't feel up to the task.

I would suggest http://www.hardwareversand.de/en/ as a starting point as they are (were) pretty competitive on price. Just don't use their assembly service, it's complete garbage!

Thanks all for your help so far. So the HN machine is completely off the agenda!

I'd be happy to buy the parts and get someone build it but my brother did the same and unfortunately it was a bit of a disaster with compatability issues and hardware failures

I'm based in Dublin, and travel up and down to Tipperary for the weekends.
