Hows it going folks, I'm looking for some advice on these cars:
    Audi A4
    VW Passat
    Mondeo
Any advice on what to look out for with these particular models? Or any other cars I should consider? The time has come to replace our ancient toyota corolla. I'm looking for something with plenty of space, and hopefully relatively cheap to tax and insure. My budget would be €5000 at most.
    Thanks in advance.

i wouldn't buy any of those.

1.8Turbo would be heavy on insurance.

    06 Mondeo = mundane

05 Passat looks rough enough to be honest.

A mundane car would not bother me, I won't be driving it for fun. I have a motorbike that I use 95% of the time myself. The car is pretty much for the absolute worst weather in winter and doing the shopping/giving lifts etc.

    Ok then.

The Audi is a nice car but would be the heaviest of the lot on fuel. The fact it's a 1.8t means the insurane would slightly dearer. The only real thing i've heard them fail on is the oil pump.

The 1.8 Mondeo, i've heard bad stories but there are tonnes and tonnes of these around so there's bad to be a few.

The 1.6 FSi in the Passat is supposed to be troublesome, and so are the early B6 (of which that is).

Take each on their own merits, if i had that money and looking for a petrol car, it's Saab 93 Vectors/Aeros i'd be looking at. You should be able to get a better spec and come up a year for the 5 grand over the Passat, and 2/3 years over the Audi.

    Looking for some advise

Planing to buy my first car soon, got a max budget of €4,000. What should I be looking for for that type of cash. I'd prefer a diesel (something along the line of 1.6 as most driving I'd do would be 2 hour plus journeys (and probably with pasangers and stuff on roof racks) so the fuel efficiency appeals, but my initial searches of carzone.ie seems to suggest that I'd be only looking at cars with 120,000 miles plus for that type of cash, whereas with petrol they are going with a lot lower milage (seeing 2002s with as little as 40,000 miles) for the same money. From a maintenance point of view would I be better off going with a petrol instead?

Any other advise for a first time car buyer?

When inspecting before a purchase how do you know a car is burning oil, are there any signs to look out for?

Hey Mate, Just wondering how much you would pay for this CASH. Went up to see the dealer and he the price is €7,950 .

i would never spend 4,000 on a first car, i'd buy something cheap and cheerful to get used to driving then work up from that. (if you're already a driver, but this is your first car ignore this).

1.6 diesel - 4k - and everything else you've mentioned you're going to end up buying a piece of crap.

if you knew what you were looking at, a 1.9Tdi Passat estate would be a lovely car, but finding a genuine one is hard got.

Maintenance wise diesels are more, and generally cost more than a petrol. But with that mileage diesel is the only way to go. Also, paying a premium for a "low" mileage car is pointless when you're only going to clock big mileage up on it yourself.

i'm not a mechanic so i honestly don't know and don't think there are any ways of inspecting this, but, always look around the oil filler cap for signs of an overly clean area (ie. something that has been filled recently and cleaned up) or on the other scale a dirty area from a recent fill up.

Afaik if a car is burning oil the smoke would be blue ish out of the exhaust. You would also be able to smell bad fumes. After that, a petrol car generally shouldn't be smokey, so if it is, walk away.

Also, you could also do a bit of research into the type of car and see if they are known for burning oil. Examples of this would be a Mk4 Golf 1.4, most of the VVTi Toyotas (Avensis/Corolla).

Serious oil burning should be very obvious, a smelly car, smoke, running rough etc.

Looks good, as for the cash price you'll have to ask the dealer, everyone is different. Considering they were well over 20k new, 8k isn't bad for 4 years.

Also, make sure the tax isn't dear ;)

I asked him, and he said he would do it €7,650 cash. Any thoughts?

    What warranty are you getting?

Offer maybe €7,400 and work from there?

Just saw the above, worth a call but i'd be very weary as it's very cheap.

A years warranty is on it. See when i went to look at it today there was other people there looking at it too, which is why people he said that price. Also it has only been on the market about 2 days now.

Do a history check on it, ring a few insurances for quotes (that'll rule out it being crashed) and work from there :)

    Hi Limerrick man,

Great thread you got here. I was just wondering if you can share your thoughts on the below cars.

This is will be first car so i am looking for something small an in the price range of €2,000

1)..Audi €1500 Year 2001 ( I like the look of this audi, but is it the engine too big for a Learner Driver, insurance etc? )

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3567186

    2) Ford Fiesta €2,250 Year 2003

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3545509

    3) Ford Fiesta €2,350 Year 2003

    Thanks a mil.

Best thing to do is price insurance. On the grand scheme of things, the Audi will be a few bob more quarterly on tax,but the Audi is leagues, and leagues ahead of quality in that Fiesta. The seats in those Fiesta's are horrid, but they're a great car.

That's badly presented, even showing the photos of the worn buttons.

One thing to look out for in Audi's is worn buttons, they've a coating over a white plastic.

Wouldn't be jumping out at me to be honest.

I might take a look at it later. I'm not finding many cars that I like in my budget so far. Aside from the buttons though anything to watch for?It doesn't say anything about it in the ad but I presume the timing belt should have been done on it by now.

  • I had a look at the A4. Started it up and "service" appeared on the dash straight away. The timing belt must be done. It seemed ok besides that, no funny noises from the engine etc. Haven't a clue how much the belt costs to get done so I think I'll give it a miss.
Saw this bmw on done deal, looks tidy but the mileage is similar to the audi so I presume it might need to get the timing belt done too…

    The Bmw's are a chain.

Once that car isn't losing coolant/head gasket gone you'll be fine.

My sister has one the very same as it and she gets about 39odd mpg's out of it.

Doesn't say much about NCT, i'd find out when the test was out (it would be due this year) and when the tax was out.

if both of these are out long, i'd say away. Could easily be a money pit.

(They're not worth much fully tested either).

Any thoughts on the value of this A6 S-Line 2.0 Tdi??

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201227208966884

The garage itself isn't exactly known for it's value, but this to me actually seems quite good. Thinking of having a look at it.

I was actually looking at that car yesterday, first thing that struck me was the wheels, they werren't great looking and as far as i remember, they were manky. didn't take much notice of the rest of it to be honest, theres a small late twenties, black haired salesman in there that i'd avoid with the plague, he's an arsehole.

    Two quick car shopping questions:

    1. I'm viewing a car in a few hours and would like a test drive (private sale). Can I take out insurance for one day? I'm with Axa but they have said that they don't allow test drives

    2. The car is only going for €950, is it worth running a car history check? I might not bother.
