ohhh and blade i was thinking more about the fakes from china. i seen a guy on ebay selling them saying "dont buy originals, mine are better looking"

Ah no, I was talking about contemporary forgeries, struck at that time to deceive. These are usually more valuable than the official ones. What fakes was that Chinese guy selling anyway? I know they do a lot of ancient coins, Roman etc.

It's a Gold Sovereign, the back of the coin shows George slaying a dragon.

A Google search will give you an evaluation on your Gold Sovereign. That's all I'd be doing anyway as it's not my area. AFAIK most of these Sovereigns are valued at their current bullion value unless they are mint uncirculated.

Great stuff guys loving this topic, i'm new to the whole coin collecting and am really starting to get into it.

Anyways i have 1 coin flithy dirty, no intention of cleaning it myself, all i can identify on the coin is the word HIBERNIA and what maybe a harp its brown in colour and about the same size as a 2 euro coin maybe slightly bigger,

    Any ideas?

    Sounds like a Geroge 3rd 1805 or 4th Penny 1822 or 1823. Lists at Fine @ £10 in Spinks 2003

If its about the size of a 2 euro its a half penny and more than likely 1805 as this is the most common date and in fair condition generaly sells for 2-5 euro

    Need help identifying a coin

Its a really skinny compared to normal coins and its in bad shape. I cleaned it as best i could and i'm fairly sure its a coin.
The below pics are the same but one points out two shapes that are symmetrical on the coin

    any ideas?

Hee hee not much to go by there is there? what's on the other side? All I can say is I'm almost certain it's not an Irish coin, after that it could be from anywhere! Interesting puzzle, I doubt this is the right discussion board to be asking on, perhaps somewhere theres some world coin experts.

Right it's British so I'm out, I'll let the others guess because that's all I'd be doing. That sheild was common on a few coins.

dacam: I don't see anything there that would be worth much more than face value, unless any of those early English coins are in mint condition or of a scarce variety which I doubt as it looks like a random collection of common dates.

Thanks Blade, the majority are in very good condition. I can't determine what a professional would class as very good compared to me, all, I can say is all the features are clearly visible and clear.
I was told the 1879 penny might be valuable?

Any of those early pennies could be valuable but it really depends on the condition and the varieties. For eg. theres a "small date" 1879 penny which is quite valuable even in low grade, but the large date 1879 isn't worth as much. Theres a total of 4 different varieties of that 1879 penny alone. If you post VERY clear close up photos I can tell you, but it had want to be damn clear as the differences are small.

Anyone know when the central bank will stop changing punts?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,494 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

@The Nutty M: I don't know anything about notes so someone else can probably step in there. As regards the coins, I'm afraid nothing really stands out at being worth much over face value except: The milled edge pound at around 20 euro and the 1966 10 shilling Pearse at around the same depending on condition. Check those millenniums in case any of those are milled edge too. As regards the English ones, it's all down to condition, dates and varieties as to wether you have anything worth something. If it's a random collection of circulated stuff it's unlikely theres anything of value but that can't be ruled out without seeing them.

@Fighting Irish: At the moment theres no timeframe but that could change, though I'm sure there'll be plenty of notice.

Sorry Graciie, what Judgement Day is saying is that there is nothing there of value other than what they can be converted into Euros for, which isn't worth doing.

Right here if you post a picture. Though unless it's in a nice condition it won't be worth much. It would be a William and Mary, you should see their 2 busts on it. This would be the coinage that William III had minted just after defeating James II at the battle of the Boyne. Value would range from about 10 Euro upwards depending on condition.

Ebay. Find some similar notes for sale and put a watch on them so you can see what they sell for.

As mentioned previously, tears lower the value considerably, stamps, pen marks and pinholes also.

I'll give you a general valuation having not seen the notes, assuming there are in presentable condition, no pin holes tears or writing on them and are below mint condition:
    10 Shillings,6/6/68,6/6/68 ~€15 each
    5 Pounds,28/9/67 ~€25
