Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Mistake with LC subjects/School timetable

    Posting for a friend.

    Basically, towards the end of TY a few months ago a friend of mine went to his year head about his Leaving Cert subjects. They confirmed that he would have his 3 choice subjects and during the Summer they sent him a letter confirming again that he had his 3 choice subjects. He was guaranteed that he would have his 3 choice subjects twice and he had gone on to buy the school books for these subjects.


    Yesterday he began 5th year and saw that biology (Which is NOT one of his choice subjects) was on his timetable. When he went to his year head about this they said that it was a timetable mistake, they couldn't do anything about it and that he would have to take biology (which he has no interest in and didn't choose). A similar situation has happend to about 7 others in his year after they had also been guaranteed their choice subjects as well.

    I just find this mistake to be ridiculous! The school should be trying to fix this problem but they're not doing anything at all!

    What should he do? Should he go to the principal? Would the department of education be able to do anything about this?

    Hmmm. Get his parents to have immediate meeting with year head and bring proof of offer of your subjects. Check school for "options" policy to make sure school doesn't have wiggle room along the lines of "all offers subject to hrs /teachers etc." If no policy school has no leg to stand on and if you get resistance from year head escalate to vp/p/ bom quoting proof and lack of policy.

    The Department of Education have nothing to do with how schools timetable subjects, nor do they care.

    He can (with his parents) ask for a meeting with the principal. There could be a whole host of reasons he has been put down for biology.

    The school may have had a cut in their teaching allocation and do not have the hours to run the subject. In the end enough students may not have put down that subject.

    Some other issue may have arisen with the timetable during the summer which meant a re-jig was needed and it meant a subject couldn't be offered on a particular block.

    He may have put down a subject which is a practical subject which would have a maximum number of 24 in a class, if more applied for the subject, a draw might have been held.

    You haven't given much information so it's hard to say.

    You need to be realistic about how schools operate rather than going all legal about it. Pretty much every school in the country operates on the basis of 'subject to hours/teachers'. If there aren't enough students to do the subject or no teachers to teach the subject then the subject can't be offered.
