Hi

Just asking on behalf of a neighbour who planted trees ten years ago.
He recently got a letter stating that he had until this november to submit a plan for the next ten years and failure to do so again november would see loss of the grant etc.
Can anyone tell me what is this Plan ?
What can be or has to be done etc.

Forest Management Plan Years 11-20

The purpose of the management plan is to provide information to the owner and the Forest Service, on the current status of plantation as well as setting out future proposed management operations. The data collected is of use for inventory, planning and budgetary purposes. A forester who is registered with this Department should prepare the management plan. The forester will carry out a field assessment to prepare the plan and should record and update all species, areas and plot boundaries on a certified species map. A once-off payment of 300 euro will be paid to forest-owners who have submitted a Management Plan, by way of contribution towards the associated costs. This will be included in the annual forestry premium payment.

Drawn up by forester-not sure how detailed it needs to be with respect to expected yields.


As an addendum , it would be interesting to see if the plantation signed-off on by the relevant forest inspector lived up to the expectations of the Inspector, and perhaps could be used as a yardstick by which to measure his/her competence.

Still a little bit confused.
The forester will carry out a field assessment to prepare the plan .

Is the cost of this more than 300 euro ?
Would he say for example this tree has to go or that one.
This hedge needs to be cleared to allow room.
And is it an estimate of what timber will be available in yrs.

Final question.
When the times comes for thinning or trees to be cut can the owner do this himself or has a forester to be paid to carry it out.

It's a plan for the effective management of a plantation. It should contain description of the stand and suggest a management regime of thinning, roading, felling etc.
Cost? No idea, but I'm sure it will vary greatly depending on the amount of work to be done. Shop around, call some people on the register of forestry consultants...and make sure the guy you get is a qualified forester.
