    Travel Assistance

    Dublin Bus Travel Assistance Scheme

In January 2000, Dublin Bus decided that all new buses bought by the company would be low floor wheelchair accessible. To date, over 50% of our fleet and one third of our routes are operated by low floor buses. These buses have a number of features to help improve the quality of travel for all of our customers including:
    1. Low floor single step
    2. Kneeling suspension to further reduce entry step height
    3. Retractable ramp at entrance
    4. Improved grip bars
    5. Palm-activated bell pushes
    6. Priority space for wheelchair user
    7. Wider gangways for customer comfort

We know that physically changing our buses is only the first step to our goal of ‘Transport for all’. We also realise the importance of informing and assisting people so they gain the confidence to use their bus service independently. That’s why we have introduced the Dublin Bus Travel Assistance Scheme.

What is the Travel Assistance Scheme?

The Travel Assistance Scheme can enable people to do things that they would otherwise find difficult or impossible. We offer practical advice on planning a journey using public transport and we can provide someone to accompany you for the first few times you use our service. Our trained staff will call to you and accompany you on any journey you wish to make using public transport. This service will operate on Dublin Bus, DART and Luas. Where the service user requires the bus to be wheelchair accessible, the service will be available on routes that are operated by low floor buses, please see routes on this brochure. The low floor network will increase as we replace 100 buses per year with a view to having all of our services fully accessible by 2012.

    Who can use the Scheme?

The scheme is available to all who would like to avail of public transport in Dublin but need assistance and information in order to build confidence to use the service independently.
Participants must be over 18 years.

    How do I book?

We offer assistance, free of charge between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday. You can contact our Travel Assistance Co-ordinator by phone, post or e-mail. We will take your details, establish your requirements and make contact with you within 24 hours to arrange a date and time to travel assist you.
