    RTÉ reveals Christmas TV schedule
RTÉ Television today revealed details of its festive programme line-up, with a menu of the best in home-produced Christmas specials, Irish network movie premieres and a dramatic year-end finale in 'Fair City'.

'Fair City' airs on Christmas Day and the one-hour special promises to be a drama-filled affair not least for Nicola who, after a turbulent year, decides to confront her sister Philippa and her partner Maher about their affair.

Also on RTÉ One at 3.40pm you can catch the Irish network premiere of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' and later that evening you can see Pierce Brosnan as 007 in 'Die Another Day'.

Comedy highlights include 'Killnaskully - The Nativity' featuring Pat Shortt and 'Des Bishop Live at Vicar Street' both on RTÉ One on Christmas Day.

Fans of 'The Office' have the chance to catch the show's crescendo in the form of the two-part Christmas Special over on RTÉ Two on St Stephen's Day.

Movie highlights on St Stephen's Day include 'Shrek' and 'Moulin Rouge', both on RTÉ One.

Viewers celebrating the New Year at home, can join Dara O'Briain, regular panellists Colin Murphy and Ed Byrne and some special guests for a festive edition of 'The Panel'.

Tommy Tiernan also features in a special half-hour programme called 'Cracked', while later that night, Gay Byrne invites you to join him and his special guests as they ring in 2005 on 'The New Year Countdown'.

    Yeah, tell me about it...

    Such crap films..

'Die Another Day' was terrible! 'Shrek' was good but very over-rated. 'Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone' is probably the best of the 3, in my opinion. 'Prisoner Of Azkaban' comes a close second though!

Got both 'The Office Xmas Specials' and 'Tommy Tiernan: Cracked' on DVD. Staying away from the terrible 'Killnaskully'!

The only things i'll probably watch is 'Des Bishop at Vicar Street' (was gonna buy it on DVD.. now i don't have to) and 'The Panel' never fails to raise a laugh!

Des Bishop on Christmas Day !

And som eone was going to buy his DVD!!!

I don't get that, her him, especially that work experience programmme, basing stand up on work experience, and then limiting it to a lot of shouting its beyond me

Me and my best mate DID try watch it a few times, but mostly just seeign how long we could endure it. Afterwards we found "Oireachtas Report" an enjoyable experience.
He only reminds me of the guy in the local , who is loud, sometimes funny to be sure, but isn't every one sometimes funny

Strange RTE put so much of there own stuff on Xmas Day but then dispite murmurs obviously the people chose to watch it I think ha;lf scared they might miss something the one time they don't)

The movies seem the kind u can have on in the background, no need to engage the brain so u can be sociable tot he family/visitors

Good to see Gaybo "earning" his 200 grand a year retainer

    Has this been proven???

Also I personally think that the new years night show pre-recorded is a better idea. They significally improve what RTE had on during previous New Years. Which wouldn't be hard. Won't be watching it anyway.

Some great shows coming up over xmas on BBC. From Digital Spy:
    BBC One's Winter lineup

New drama and documentaries headline the BBC One's £178 million winter lineup, announced earlier today.

BBC One kicks off its winter schedule with Supervolcano, a fact-based drama portraying what could happen if Yellowstone were to erupt again. The volcano underneath Yellowstone National Park is the only active supervolcano on earth, and when these supervolcanoes erupt they do so with a force a thousand times greater than that of Mount Vesuvius.

The drama will be supplemented by a documentary The Science Behind Supervolcano, to be shown on BBC Two.

On the historical side, BBC One is treating us to Ghengis Khan, a film about the Mongolian leader who was either a genius visionary or the personifaction of evil, depending upon whose side you take.

Lorraine Heggessey, Controller BBC One, said: "BBC ONE continues to blaze a trail using innovative production techniques to bring specialist documentary subjects alive for a wide mainstream audience.

"We are constantly broadening the range of programmes in peak time to inform audiences about the natural, scientific and historical world."

The channel also has a range of dramatic productions for the winter season.

Archangel, based on Robert Harris' excellent novel of the same name, sees an Oxford historian unravel the mysteries of Josef Stalin's secret diaries. Daniel Craig takes the lead role of Fluke Kelso.

Another adaptation of a novel, Meera Syal's Life Isn't All Ha Ha Hee Hee tracks the intertwining lives and love lives of friends Chila, Sunita and Tania and shows the blending and clashing of English and Asian culture.

Doctor Who comes back to our screens, this time incarnated as Christopher Eccleston. Billie Piper will play his companion Rose Tyler.

In terms of documentaries the channel will bring the story of evolution in Journey Of Life. The Adventures of Robert Louis Stevenson examines the life and works of the author of Treasure Island. Grandchild of the Holocaust sees a 13-year-old boy try to find the truth behind the fate of his grandmother who was incarcerated in Auschwitz for four years.

Is it the original The Count of Monte Cristo they're showing? or the newer version?

BBC 1 will be showing the premiere of Harry Potter on Christmas Day. I advise everybody to tune in over there if you have it. No stupid and irritating branding on that channel. British TV will probably be much better in the prime time schedule too. Die another Day has already premiered on British TV.

I will only be tuning into British TV from now on, like I do most of the time because RTE will not do away or reduce the size of their completely over sized branding (bugs).

I reccomend everybody boycott RTE because of this or just e-mail their director of programming horand@rte.ie and ask them to do something about this massive eye soar.

Yes the BBC paid £10 million for the rights... "HELLO?!?!?!?!"

TBH, get a classic like Die hard on.

    P.S. I may be wrong.

but RTÉ will be ad free Christmas Day, the BBC will also (as it always is) and the BBC also has widescreen transmissions, BBC wins out

What the hell? Jesus!?! Do RTE have shares in Amaray cases or what? This is horrible. If I never watch terrestrial television again (And at this stage, it's looking decidedly likely) can I get back my license fee...?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Dissappointed with TG4 line up this christmas.

    It's on Teasc (TEXT) 4.

As for TV3, when the start broadcasting they said that Christmas TV was dead. I don't know if they have changed their minds since ITV took a share in it.

The BBC pay this kind of money for movie rights.

RTE buys packages and spends around 25,000,000 per year on rights.
