    I was walking the line of thinking that fifty-one was LI, but the 50-1 D-I got me with my pants down.. .

    The fifty one clue is 4d. I'm assuming it has LI in it too.

    surely 4D is

    not 3D?

    3d -
    EDITOR - EDIT = TIDE (water rising) + or

    12a -

    15a -
    RIDGE

    4d -
    EDITED - how does fifty-one = IT???
    13d -
    KIND

    fifty-one = 50-1 which reads as 501, five hundred & one - DI.. .

    The clue is "This been shortened to fifty-one, indeed".

    Now my understanding is that "indeed" means "in deed" i.e. The letters D E E D are four of the six. The direct part of the clue is "shortened" which gives us edited.

    So what I don't get is how "fifty-one" gives the other two letters (I T). I see your logic for getting the letters D I, but that still leaves us without a T.

    I think that 4D is
    ELIDED
    . This gives LI for fifty-one inside an anagram of DEED.

    I would rate this as a poor clue, because "indeed" doesn't tell us that the letters DEED need to be rearranged before LI is inserted.

    "This been shortened" isn't very grammatical, but perhaps it's intended to provide an illustrative example of the answer?

    e·lide verb (used with object), e·lid·ed, e·lid·ing. 1. to omit (a vowel, consonant, or syllable) in pronunciation.

    Yes that's it. I think the first three words of the clue are an illustrative example alright, but it's not a very accurate example. He has omitted a word instead of a letter of syllable. It's a very unsatisfactory clue, not least because I have never heard of the word!

    I was just about disagree, but when I stopped to think about it, I realized you are quite correct, there is no anagram indicator. From what I can make out, Crosaire is considered to be a very much non-standard setter, and this would be a typical situation.

    That being said ... he still provides us with hours of fun - or frustration in my case :D

    Another clue I'm not happy with - there was no indicator to reverse DA to give AD; Anyway, I can't remember the exact wording of the clue ...

    Times = Ages
    Adages = A saying = Saw

    From www.dictionary.com

    saw - noun a sententious saying; maxim; proverb: He could muster an old saw for every occasion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 527 ✭✭✭Spike440

    Hmmm. I wasn't aware of anything beyond the usual two meanings of "saw". But hey, we got it done in the end.

    Onwards and upwards. Let's have a look at today's. *reads* Wagner? Oh god.
