Transition year-thoughts so far?

So for all the current TYs, what are your thoughts so far?
Are you enjoying it?
Also what modules/trips/events is everyone doing?
Are you flooded with projects? :rolleyes:

So far I'm finding it extremely boring and I'm actually regretting my decision of doing it so much. I'm quite a shy person and I think only really the outgoing, confident people are really enjoying it. One thing I really hate is that business is compulsory for us in my school even if we hadn't done it for the jc? Oh and no subject goes too in depth this year so it's not as interesting.
The modules I'm doing are anthropology, chinese, politics, beauty care, photography and film studies. Around 40 of us are going to Barcelona and Valencia for our trip next May(fingers crossed I'm picked!). As for the events we're doing a musical, fashion show and a TY ball.

I have to say that I'm inclined to agree with you, i'm finding it quite boring aswell. I don't know about other schools but in my school, loads of teachers just show endless films with no relevance to the subject they're "teaching".
My class is also slowly beginning to drive me insane!!!! They really coudn't give a toss about school, are very disruptive and are creating what I find to be a very negative enviroment. It's really disheartening when I have all my work done and up to date, and others are repeatedly failing to produce any work at all. I talked to my form tutor about it and it got better for a while but it's back to being bad again.
I do enjoy some of the modules though

we started our new set this week and we're doing chemistry, economics, careers, radio, library and art. One gripe I have is that we only have one 40min class of some modules which really isn't enough time to cover a lot.
We have activities every Thursday afternoon which is good fun

finished rock climbing last week and starting swimming tomorrow!
Went to Killary in September which was great fun and going skiing in Andorra in February which I'm really looking forward to!!
Also an upside to the small workload is that i have time to focus on learning Spanish and catching up on reading. Reading Homer's Odyssey at the moment!

I love it so far! We are always doing a project, and currently I have like 3 national competitions to compete in so it's busy and we have like team meetings every lunch which is alright! I feel wrecked every time I come home which is alright despite the fact I have 3-4 hours of training after wards! The only downside I cab find is that I can feel that I'm getting rusty when it comes to writing alot in short amount of time and watching DVDs in class is boring

. Like OP said, I'm very shy as well and find it hard to socialise with EVERYONE in the class but as we grind through TY, we're bonding as a family. Recently we went 3 hours doing Lazer Combat in Carlingford and it was mad Craic, probably the best moments I had with my class in our 4 years

Overall, it really depends on your school, if they do a good ty programme. My class is small (16 people) so it's easy to manage and do stuff with teachers. I'm also doing many things out side school which is great, Ty gives me the opportunity as I'll hardly have time when studying for the LC. I feel like I'm developing as a person, but I'm really concerned that my work academic work ethic is dropping. Might do English JC papers or something to maintain myself on that part.

I hope everyone else is having fun, my thumb hurts from typing this mega rant!

I like it so far. There's 3 TY group in my school this year and I think 63 - 65 total students. We do Life, Celtic Studies (Essentially 3 different classes, Irish, Art & Woodwork) Prep which is like a community involvement class and a good few more.
I do Chinese on Wednesday and Cooking on Thursday and tomorrow I'm spending the day in a Rape Crisis Centre. We have a load of projects to do but thankfully (for now) I'm on top of them all!

I actually wish my teachers would show films. All of our classes are common level this year excluding maths and the teachers are pretty much teaching us bits of this and bits of that because they have nothing to do with us. The majority of the class never have work done either so we're on the same boat
Wow the activities sound great and the skiing, well I'm very jealous! I've been reading non-stop this year too, Carrie is my book at the moment.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much! I honestly wish I was that busy because I'm not doing a tap. Ah there's 96 TYs in my school so yeah we're a bit of a handful(and an earful most of the time). It's odd though because my school is known for their TY but I really don't see it at the moment. I feel like my brain cells are self destructing from the lack of work!

Ohh I wish my school had Celtic Studies as a module, do you enjoy it? How do you find Chinese as well, we have an oral next Wednesday which should be interesting. The Rape Crisis Centre sounds interesting, how was it?

It's pretty ****ty for me. My school's too academic, all the teachers are trying to get part of the LC course done and the majority of our modules are LC subject tasters. I know it's important but I really want to do other non-academic subjects this year. I've started projects outside of school, but you're in school for about 8 hours a day and I feel as if I'm wasting my time because we're not really doing much. To add to that, about half the TY activities we do are religious..

Ah that's not so fun. Our school aren't allowed to teach us LC material so we're stuck doing basic stuff.

I'm touching LC Higher Maths, I enjoy it as I'll be more prepared when in 5th year and gives a good insight on the course aswell. I'm the only one enjoying it out of my class, go figure

For me, TY has been pretty good. We have stuff going on most weeks and classes are fun but not complete piss takes and we do some work. Assignments had to be in by today so i spent all of yesterday doing them pretty much :P. Done 2 out of 7 Physical Challenges they have and doing the 3rd last day of school before christmas which is that we have to keep the treadmills, rowing machines and bikes going for 12 hours and we each do a minimum of 90 mins (30 on each machine). Its things like that that make it good. We have about 100 in our year but it is still fun and works well. I think the TY program in general seems really good and our coordinator is good at it. Also, at the end of the year, is a trip to Ghana to help the communities there as part of the Holy Ghost Father's missions which everyone says is really good and you will never forget your time there. So overall, i think that TY is good, im using a lot of my time Sailing and i feel that for Fifth Year, i am going to be extremely lazy about doing work as i can bearly do my tiny workload now

As a fifth year student who did TY last year, my advice to you all is to really embrace it and make the best of what's left of it. Do as many competitions as you can - great for CVs and UCAS applications and you might actually win something (I one 3 national, 1 local and 2 semi-finalists!) Fifth year is challenging so enjoy this year!

enjoy it now cos 5th year is all about the leaving , study study study thats all you will hear. you wont be bord in 5th year ,be warned.
