Any word on how the HUGE bash at the national stadium is going?

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0324/householdcharge.html
Around 3,000 people have attended a rally in Dublin to protest against the Household Charge.
The event which was held in the National Stadium was organised by the group the Campaign against Household and Water Taxes.
Activists travelled from various parts of the country to attend the event which was addressed by a number of TDs.
Socialist Party TDs Joe Higgins and Clare Daly, Independent TD Seamus Healy, Richard Boyd Barrett, and Joan Collins were among the TDs present.
Latest figures show that over 328,000 households have now paid or registered to pay the €100 Household Charge, with around 80% of those eligible for the charge still unaccounted for.

A spokesperson for the agency tasked with collecting the levy said today that the volume of people making the payment is increasing on a daily basis.
She said 328,201 applications have now been processed, but she said the actual number who have paid is higher as there is a backlog of postal payments that have to be sorted.
The 328,000 represents around 20% of the 1.6 million eligible household who are liable for the charge.
Householders have until 31 March to pay the charge without incurring any penalties.

Around 100 local authority offices around the country will open their doors next Saturday in order to facilitate those who want to pay the levy.
A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment confirmed today that teams will be knocking on doors once the deadline has passed informing householders that they are liable for the charge.

3,000 is a respectable showing for an event with the ambition to plan for 2,000. It's quite a poor show for those claiming over a million supporters for their position.

    Tax evasion = Scum bag

Not paying the household charge ( a tax) = hero

When I was back in Ireland in February, I phoned up on behalf of my Dad (he asked me to) & asked for the forms to be sent out. He got the forms eventually.......once he went to the post office and picked them up. They were sent out via City Post, who don't do deliveries to private residences AFAIK. I mean really, first you can't pay directly via the post office and now you may not even get your forms unless you have some business to take care of in the post office? I'm not in the country, so it doesn't affect me directly but it sure as hell affects my family.

    What an absolute shambles.

I would say it's going well, just watched the late last show, it was interesting. 80% still not registered. I'm not the only one who feels the money will not stay local. No one will end up in prison.

No one will end up in prison unless they act the maggot in front of a tetchy judge, but that's not to say you won't end up paying penalties - regardless of your feelings on where the money might go (hint - its laid out in law where it goes).

Meh. That's not the point of my post and you know it. Regardless of how people feel about this charge, it should be piss easy to pay it, not the convoluted mess it has become.

Lets wait and see how many register before the deadline. I bet 50% will not register.

Difference is that it's only going to go up and up. This HUGE protest is the best this campaign will muster.

The law you keep banging on about, the money will not be spent on local amenities. If we don't pay the charge it's doubtful we will pay the penalties.

You've probably not heard of the industrial action which may be in the offing.

So do I. So does pretty much everyone. But thats not a problem since registration late works just as well, if bringing with it a small penalty.

I am not paying it, would have no problem paying it if it was going to stay at €100 per year, but reports have it that next year it will be over €1,000, definitely would not be able to afford that. Was anyone listening to Luke 'Ming@ on Late Late last night, he says its not for the councils at all but to prop up the banks and bondholders etc. and he rightly pointed out that when people bought their houses they paid stamp duty which is a property tax in itself. We are being hit with far too many charges and it is always the middle class who have to pay for the sins of the big boys and developers (Mahon Tribunal)! Time the ordinary citizens of this country stood up to them. Sorry, but I'm really annoyed especially following the revelations from the Mahon Tribunal these last couple of days:mad:

So now the government is going to send 'teams' of enforcers, to remind people they must pay. What a ****ing joke! I never curse here but that made me laugh. How much will that cost??

Scrap this stupid tax now, let them save face. Refund those who have paid.

I am not paying and will never pay it. Until the unsecured bond debt is written off, forget it. I have to pay PAYE, Universal charge, VAT increases on virtually everything, a forthcoming property tax (ha!) septic tank charge ( I await this one with grim determination) and anything else so we can pay our masters off. I hate the IMF, but accept we have to pay up and get them out, but I do not have to pay the bondholders, and the household charge is definitely going to that in soome form, I do not accept anything the politicians who brought it in say.

I pointed you towards the specific law which makes quite clear who the recipient of the charge is. I only keep banging on about because you fail to acknowledge the reality of the act. You'll pay the penalties and the charge because you're obliged to, and you can't hide.

What will happen if we still refuse to pay regardless of people calling to the door or penalties?

I know you did but I and others still do not believe this will happen. How will we know where the money is spent? it's not as if the government is truthful to the people.
