Probably mad taking on micros when I'm still struggling with macros....
    Not at all.

Start slowly, just dealing with the micros that there seem to be plenty of. it may be only 20 species in the first year, but its the foundation to tackling far more species the following year.

It certainly does not have to be all or nothing.

I don't seem to catch many micros anyway - are a lot of them not attracted to light?

Got a new species for my garden last night - Green Carpet. I was a bit surprized I hadn't got one there before, I've trapped them elsewhere. So far this year I've also added Common Swift, Rustic Shoulder-knot and Least Black Arches to my garden list. I wonder if the mild winter has anything to do with this? It will be interesting to see how many more new species turn up over the Summer.

Also got these 3 micros some one (Mothman!) might be able to ID, all about 10mm long:

I put the actinic out last night. I had it in a more sheltered place than usual and it really seems less bright than before (though maybe that's because I'm used to the mv now:confused:).
6 x Garden Carpet (don't they move fast once disturbed)
    1x Brimstone
    1x Clouded Bordered Brindle
    1x Clouded Drab

and this below.. is it a twin spot carpet?

:D and this ones even more variable than the variations in my book just to confuse me!
The carpets are terribly pretty little things. I like to see them but they do move fast once disturbed at all. I only managed a photo of one of this mornings 6 garden carpets before they took off!

You need to be up earlier :pac: when its cooler and then they are not so flighty

Looks nothing like the last one! Obviously a very variable species, evolved to confuse moth trappers;)

Sorry bad photos today... was in a hurry and it was raining!

Is this a Small Square Spot?

And this  I'm coming up with too many possibilities! I think I'd left the flash on there so may look paler that it was.

    Both Rustic Shoulder-knot
This is the answer to so many id requests at this time of year. It just isn't as strongly marked as the other species about at moment. But the shoulder mark can be seen in both your pics.

Just a dark and a light one, the latter probably a bit worn as well, but the dots which are obvious in the light specimen can be seen in the dark one.

put the actinic out last night. Up bright and early to get it in before the rain started :)

    Clouded Bordered Brindle x 9
    Rustic Shoulder Knot x 2
    Peppered Moth x 2
    1 x Small Angle Shades

plus 1 big micro or small macro that I haven't identified yet :)

With the small angle shades I wondered if my marbled minor from Friday was mis-identified.
