On RTE2, 12:20PM Saturday (lunchtime) is one of those films that didn't really grab me when I saw it many years ago, but which may deserve a critical reappraisal: Joe Versus the Volcano, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I've seen it pop up on a few "overlooked classic" lists in the last few years as one of those films that critics love if they "get" it. Ebert has been saying for years that he almost put it on the schedule for EbertFest, and finally did it this year, saying:
As I wrote in my review: "I had not seen this movie before. Most movies, I have seen before. Most movies, you have seen before. Most movies are constructed out of bits and pieces of other movies, like little engines built from cinematic Erector sets. But not 'Joe Versus the Volcano'." I continue to believe it deserves greater recognition, and cannot understand why I gave it 3.5 stars instead of four.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

I must take a relook, I really didn't like it, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (God! not sure if I could sit through it again).

Watch some of it again not as bad as i remember, Meg Ryan is actually very good in her three roles.

If yeh had to pick then certainly choose the 3:10 to Yuma remake a great film with some great performances, Terminator 3 is a shadow of the first two really and some parts will annoy fans of tbhe prvious two but not a bad popcorn movie all the same.

RTE1 is showing Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven on Saturday morning at 9:20am. Strange time, but it's a film I've been meaning to see for years, from what I've heard about its startling imagery.

Saturday night, CH4 has Witness at 9PM, one of my favourite films of the 80s: Harrison Ford as a cop who has to go in to hiding in an Amish community, after a young Amish boy is witness to a murder by another cop. With Kelly McGillis.

On Sunday @ 6:15PM, ITV2: Hulk. I thought Ang Lee's "arthouse superhero" film was woefully underrated by people expecting a "standard" superhero movie. This one is a bit more thoughtful about the impact of superpowers, and evokes a comic book feel through split screens without overdoing the FX. My only real complaint is that the CGI is a bit weightless.

    TOMORROW NEVER DIES

Sunday 5.55 on RTE 2 HD.

Brosnan's harder edged Bond film. It's no FRWL or indeed
LTK but it does have that certain viciousness amongst the standard
mayhem which elevates it above most of the rest, post the
    OHMSS/DAF era.
