I can't use the tripod as I have to stand on the bench in the back garden. I need some stars in the background, so hopefully those usual clouds vanish by the next flyover.

This next pass will be a bit higher up so looking like it will be a bright one for sure.

    Edit:

It was right above me this time, and not easy to hold steady while recording.

Came on specifically to ask that. Seems a second light trailing it for at least half of it pass from my view.

Must have been a satellite but my it seemed really close!

  • Registered Users Posts: 226 ✭✭Hoof_Hearted

That was a sight! Two for,the price of one, if I can catch a meteorite as well it's a hat trick. Marvellous!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,902 ✭✭✭MagicIRL

The tailing object was an ATV supply vessel according to Astronomy Ireland's webpage. Incredible stuff! I've been following it using an app on my Android phone for months now. I want to buy a decent telescope and see if I can see anything up close!

That was ATV 5 following the ISS. It is the final cargo supply ship being sent by the European Space Agency to the ISS. It's due to dock on the 12th August so it should be visible following close behind for the next few nights.

Edit: Beat me to it Magic.

It was an ESA cargo ship that was following it. It was launched two weeks ago and is meant to dock in a few hours.

It was a great sight, wasn't expecting it at all. It'll be great to see how much closer it will be in the next passing.
