I've been making a lot of straight up house music over the last couple of months, but this month I've started off with something a bit different.

You could always try layering the sound with another operator track running a different oscillator type or maybe the same one on a lower octave and detune it slightly.
Regarding free synths, I find you can get some decent ones with magazine like Computer Music. I buy the online version (it's around 4 euro) and there's a always a free synth or effect with it. DUNE came with one issue and it's a great synth. Some of the advancd feature ares disabled as it's not the full version but you're talking advanced modulation and built in fx which you can add yourself anyway. Here's a demo of it:

Good synth that, easy to use, nice interface...

pretty nice! I like that crackle in the background, it really adds a lot to the song , mystery I guess.

Very nice indeed. Like a mashup between Boards of Canada and Jean Michel Jarre. Lovely stuff. I just wonder if the main kick is slightly too low in the mix.

    Cheers lads!
The crackle in the background is just a little vinyl crackle sample with some reverb.

You reckon the kick needs to be louder?

Lead synths could be abit more powerful in the mix, the drop though is good, typical big room... good track, personally not mad into big room...i like the genre, but its getting overplayed in all the clubs because of martin garrix's track, but what you did is awesome for what it is

Nice peppy number here. I'm not 100% convinced on the high pitched piano/harp sequence but that's a minor gripe.

At around 0.14 I though it was the intro to Star Trek: TNG :)
Intersting little ditty although pretty hard to listen to. Seems to have the potential to do some aural damage!

really good, flows well into the next track aswell el sueno...but i think el sueno has what equinox is missing, and its a decent bass line...el sueno is an awesome track and equinox is too, but equinox needs more of what el sueno has...if that makes sense...really good stuff though, i can listen to it without a worry

Yeah, not really my scene but you've got the big sounds down pretty well.
From about 1.00 to 1.14 there seems to be something not quiet right with the synth, almost as if there's a slight stutter going on or something.

Nice tight track. Sounds compliment each other pretty well throughout. Not sure if I'd have as much reverb on the hi-hat though, it almost seems the draw it away too much from the mix?

    new track for you guys...
ok so i attempted house, but i don't think i have the knack for it....
so here something i feel im abit better at
also, i was having trouble exporting it, one of my vsts kept crashing when i tried to export it, so i resampled it instead and exported the audio from that??...anyways

I like this one. Nice contrast between the almost 8-bit sound of the synth melody and the more grungy dub-step bass and stabs. Oly thing I'm not mad about is the kind distorted fill sound at 0.12.
Mix sounds good to me though. Nice powerful kick and some nice interesting percussion programming.

Thanks Mordeith...yeah i actually found im quite good at this type of track compared to my attempts at other styles, plus i actually enjoy listening to it without getting sick of it too fast, so im heading down this path for the moment...

yeah i the fill was just a sample of something i was messing around with, not sure why i put it in actually, i might exchange it for something more suitable

i feel drum sounds are my strength at this stage, im starting to learn how to mix them properly....i still feel weak on the synths though, ive gotten my bass lines abit better, and i used a better synth plugin this time, but im gonna keep working on those sounds

yeah i took a page from the glitch mob on the percussion end of things...

anything it needs work on technically?

im gonna buy loads of native software over the summer to try get higher quality synths and samples, i feel if i buy it now, im no longer compensating for lack of technical skill (although it can always improve), which is what i feel alot of people do...they suck, so they think buy massive will solve their problems

one person said it felt like the track was building to something but that it never quite got there, think so?

its the first of many tracks anyways, so i feel if i find my way with this one, the rest should come abit easier

I don't think it feels like it was building to something myself but in the earlier part of the track it feels like a nice female vocal could sit well over the top.

On second listen, at the the drop at 1.46 I'm not sure that the growly melody there suits very well. To me it almost feels like you might be better taking it on a more aggressive dub wobble with varying LFO rate maybe. Then again, that's been done to death, so maybe you're better off sticking to your own ideas than repeating what's already out there.

New one from myself, I wasn't going for any specific genre for this one, but it's probably house https://soundcloud.com/scoob89/tea-and-tokes

Just wondering do you guys have any particular structure when your producing?
if so could you elaborate a bit?

structures one of my biggest struggles actually, its hard to keep it together, but im getting better at it....start with an idea...maybe a drum pattern or melody line but most likely a bass line....then move on to drums (getting all the sounds right and making a beat), and some harmony (throw in a midrange synth)....do this is the clip luanch view in ableton...then once i have a nice little riff going, i move it into arrangement view...then i start doing the details, like little samples sounds and tweaking and maybe (but usually not yet) some automation....from there, onto making a chorus....or if i started with a chours, an intro or verse.....then once i have the 2 ideas down i try to structure it intro verse chorus verse (break here maybe, depends on the style) chorus outro

once thats down i start adding some finishing touches...sample fxs that i havent already added, some new ideas maybe...and whatever would suit...or change some part entirely....

then finally i start compressing and saturation( sometimes ill do this in middle of making the song as its necessary), reverbing, automating and all that mixing goodness

then after that...anything else i notice missing or that needs tweaking

then its onto mastering which i am useless at :)

love the name of the track"! XD

bit too much hihat action for me
starts getting interesting at about 2.35 intro could be abit shorter, but its good if youre djing it though to have it long i suppose.
some nice sounds going on a 4.12
low end could be mixed alittle better
also some more reverb at parts would be cool i think!

definitely a track for tea and tokes!

Hey, so attempt number 2 at that track i made

its still not there...i used a different mixing technique this time around...might have over compressed it though lol
changed afew bits aswell...have a listen, and let us know if its better and wheres still lacking, cheeeers!

    https://soundcloud.com/shanemoloneys/simple-maths-mark-ii-demo

i cut 2min mark to 3min mark out and the tune and to me, it flows a lot better. the two breaks being too similar. the metronome at the start is too long on its own. as someone else commented, around the 1min mark that sub base that comes in is great, excellent tune all round.
