Did not want to open a thread for this message, hope it fits in here.

Anyway, if you in a newsagents the next day look for the old moore 2008 ( it is a little grren book) --- open to page 11.
You will see three small paragraphs under the July calendar and the very first paragraph is about Bill Gates, that is the one to read. It is only about three lines.

I will not spoil it for you. All i will say is you must read it.

I'm a bit of a Mac noob, but here's something that's definitely getting me up to speed RSS feeds from TUAW in Google Reader (which in my opinion beats RSSowl/Thunderbird/other aggregators hands down, despite being in beta and occasionally seems to freeze).

In particular I'd recommend the "Ask TUAW" and "Mac 101" feeds, though there are tons of others too.

(Also, Yahoo Pipes is especially useful as a RSS filter if you're as sick of the flood of iPhone feature articles as I am)

To read/write to NTFS volumes (i.e. bootcamp partitions) from OSX

    http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/ for Mac Fuse

plus you will also need the NTFS driver

    http://www.ntfs-3g.org/

If that all seems a little too much, try the NTFS driver from Paragon

One for the budding (And Pro) DJ's in the line of playback software is DJ 1800. It comes as a fully featured working demo application and compared to Traktor, is simple and sweet and a lot cheaper than Traktor. It is geared for G4, G5 and Intels as well, so it will work on most models.

    - Bootcamp the new HD and created larger partition
    - Restore image to new larger partition with winclone

    Hi All

As a new poster to this forum I thought I'd just throw out a friendly piece of advice, one get yourself surge protects for your equipment and...

Back up and Back up now
A lot of home users/small business users that I meet in my day to day business have no backup or no backup strategy or disaster recovery strategy. Question yourself, how much is your emails/images/music worth to you. Personally I have 5 years+ worth of digital photographs, music, email I clear year on year, 3 years of accounts and correspondence but I honestly would put the most value of my pictures of family and family occasions.

Storage today is cheap, I recently bought a 2tb external firewire 800 drive for €380 this is just over 15x the size of my hardrive, now call me anal I also have a cloned second drive in my mac (G5, 2x2ghz) and backup at least once a week. So go to komplett.ie or another cheap online sales store and purchase yourself a USB2 (although apple's drivers are woeful) or Firewire 400 drive and get backing up.

Format the new drive once purchased for Mac OS Extended, journaled if you wish (10.3 onwards) and if you use classic applications (OS9) make sure and tick that relevant box (Using disk utilities found in your utilities folder).

Once done there are a few backup applications that you can use some that I have used and found fairly simple are, MODS: Feel free to add to this:

    Free
    BounceBack Express
    Carbon Copy Cloner

For those that want to pay for a backup solution there is a Pro version of BounceBack but I have used all variants of Retrospect since it's inception. Retrospect Express is quite good though hasn't kept up with its windows counterpart in development though EMC are now on the case with this and expect to see a new version of Retrospect later in the year. I've heard fantastic things about tolis group BRU backup solutions for mac, but we're getting to the Enterprise level with that and Retrospect Server.

Generally an external hard drive will suit the casual/home user and even a second one for some level of redundancy as externals can fail also, so go out and spend a couple of hundred euro get yourself a good backup drive and back up this evening.

Hope this post serves to just put a reminder for those who think their hard drive will not fail at any point or a power surge might destroy a computer, I'll ask again "How much value do you put on the data stored on your Mac".

    Nialler

Edit: For leopard users Time Machine is the most elegant solution out there, just takes an age to recover your hard drive (3+ hours for an 80gb recovery).
