I'm currently trying to learn German and I'd like to start watching a decent German TV Show with subtitles to expose myself to the language and pronunciations and what have you.

Are there any that anyone would recommend ? I'm not talking about the German equivalent of Fair City of Coronation street here btw. I'm talking highly regarded dramas or comedies.

    Thanks in advance.

Good idea. You'll be amazed how much you can pick up doing this.

First off, don't dismiss Lindenstraße! As soaps go, it's on par with Fair City but I've got a lot from it (including an accent, according to some Germans).

If you're just stating out, try watching some cartoons. No, seriously. There's still so much you can absorb from watching Spongebob and co.

Failing that, you'd probably like the dubbed shows that are popular here, like The Simpsons, the Big Bang Theory and so on. In that case, check out the shows on Pro7 in particular (geographical restrictions on their stuff so you'd need a workaround).

You might also just like to dip into the Reportage videos listed here: http://www.ardmediathek.de/fernsehen

You can usually get the gist of the topic and pick up new vocab in the short videos.

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks for that, some great help and advice there and its very much appreciated.

I'll check out that Lindenstraße, never needed much of an excuse to watch spongebob and on the dubbed front I guess I could start trying to find dubbed versions of whatever else I watch as it is.

Do those dubbed shows have English subtitles though ?

It's almost guaranteed the subtitles will be in German so that's why it's useful if you've already seen the show in English.

There's always Euronews in German on UPC and Sky too.

I second watching some dramas because the stories and language are easier to follow than the fast-paced comedy or cop shows in my experience.

You can also watch them with subtitles by clicking 'UT' in the corner

This is another one Sturm die Liebe

I found watching German films very useful, or English language films you already know that are dubbed into German, so you don't have to worry about the plot and can concentrate on the dialogue. My first dubbed film was Blues Brothers, where I learnt what Hasendraht was.

If you can stand it, daytime TV soaps are another good source as they're even easier to follow than Lindenstrasse, or try watching the news or Nachtmagazine. If you stick with it you'll soon get into the flow.

"Schlag den Raab" is my favorite. You find loads of episodes on youtube

Stefan Raab does irritate me sometimes and I love to see him beaten.

Nur D,A,CH
