But what's funny about it. The DAW allows for many more takes - say vocals - than tape. But people, instead of thinking, let's do loads of takes and comp them, they try to get a perfect take. It's a lot less complicated, than trying to manage multiple takes - but you might get better and more relaxed performances.

Comping on tape, with huge multi-takes is possible too, if you've got two tape machines and lots of tape. But you are forced to burn down what you've got and make decisions.

Editing out breath noises, may be over-kill, that actually kills. I was in Tesco today, and there was something playing - a woman's voice - but at one crucial bit in the song, there's an audible breath intake, and it really added maybe more than the line.......The same recording, someone either did a drum replace over a real drummers snare - or went to the bother of making the real drummers snare sound like a tinny/popping drum machine snare. It wasn't really annoying. Because the timing was off - and I notice these things these days.

DAWs are so powerful - but everyone has become a DAW junky. Things aren't really being utilised like they should.

Because, you're expecting a human to be singing, not a robot.


You hear those noises a lot on 80s recordings - they set off their own kind of high reverb sprays. It's the same with breath intakes and stuff like it. A lot of the charm of The Unforgettable Fire, is Bono's heavy breathing.
