Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    500,000 rural mobile users 'to get better signal'

    In fact ComReg made no such undertaking.

    Having taken up one third of the committee time with a self-serving opening statement, they explained away poor rural coverage as due to
    • Smartphones being less sensitive than older basic phones. (Smart phones are 'Jack of all trades and master of none' opined Commissioner Fahy)
    • Temporary loss of coverage due to Network re-organisation/consolidation. (It was like the Luas cross-city said Commissioner Fahy)
    • Planning issues. (only Spiddal was mentioned by Commissioner Fahy)

    They gave no undertaking that repeaters would be licensed. They are in any case an idiotic remedy.
    They gave no undertaking that any new spectrum (potentially the 700Mhz band) would entail higher coverage obligations.

    The coverage figures they gave, and the explanations for poor coverage experienced, were flatly disbelieved by Deputies and Senators. Deputies Moynihan and Dooley proposed suspending the meeting so that the ComReg Commissioners could go away and return with information relevant to the meeting agenda.
