Gardai are too busy setting up road blocks in rural Mayo to deal with such trivial issues such as theft, even when they have the details of the thief....

They would have baton-charged the laptop and smashed it to pieces.

the thief is still sitting there using the laptop and googling things like 'How to format a laptop' and 'DoneDeal.ie'.

Was your friend dumb enough to not have a password protection?

So let me get this straight, your friends computer was stolen - he knows who has it, he knows where it is and for some reason all he's doing is bitching on the internet?
Is that the long and the short of it?

I wonder if everyone realizes that causing a crime to solve one isn't the way to go. If you go over there, smash windows or whatever everyone is saying, the Gardai would have to arrest you too. Go in and ask to speak to the superintendent. If this does nothing, go through their complaints committee.

Better off not having Password Protection. If it was protected and the thief cant login , then it just gets formatted and its bye bye Prey Software. If he can easily login then he doesnt need to wipe it .

he can also uninstall the prey software though

Has the OP posted where this guy is and his photos? A lot of people frequent boards, someone might know him.

You said he was selling it on Donedeal, offer to buy it from him if you see it being sold, turn up with the photos and his address and tell him your taking it back. Whats he going to do? Call the guards? ''My stolen laptop has been stolen!'' Guards would probably turn up too!

This is why we need private police forces.

I am disappoint. This should have been resolved within an hour with lots of lols if you'd only gone to the right forum.

is this real? op hasn't come back

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,327 ✭✭✭Sykk

OP, this is an absolutely infuriating story to read.

Tell you what. I'm a girl. I wear glasses. We go round the place, I let you punch me in the mouth, and we inform yer man that I will quite gleefully tell the guards that he just hit me if he doesn't hand over the laptop.

What has him punching you in the mouth got to do with you wearing glasses  :pac:

OP, similar thing happened to me, the guards couldn't give a rats ass.

    Here's what to do:
    • Wait till he look up porn and has a ****
    • Get a few pictures of him. (His orgasm face and hand on knob idealy)
    • Print a load of pictures of him poster size
    • Stick them up around the area he lives in. *

*That's probably illegal, so not nessessarly a good idea

Why would you tell the gards you smashed the windows or let anyone see you for that matter :confused::confused:

You can freeze the device and make write messages that come up on the screen for those using it, send him a message!
I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you give me back my laptop, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

What software can you use to track a laptop?
There are many solutions and Prey is the one being discussed here.

    It requires two things:
    * An account that has no password protection (so the thief can log on andPrey can work)
    * That account to not have admin privileges (so the thief can't uninstall Prey)

Get your mates turn up with a picture of your man in your hand when he opens the door hand him the picture give him 2 choice leave with your laptop or smash in his face. Make sure your friends are big and be shouldnt bother you any more :-) take it in your own hands.

Let us know how it turns out :-)

To those adovcating this approach. Do you not realise that the guy will KNOW where he stole the laptop, therefore he will know how to find the OP again. Odds are, the thieves mates are scummier and stabbier than the OP's mates. If OP does what you are suggesting - then he might just be putting himself at risk of a worse beating.

Same happened down here recently with an iPhone which was stolen. The location was identified but the owner was told they could 'do nothing'.

Now, if the laptop was shoplifted it would be a different kettle of fish.

Even if it does have admin privileges you can set up a password on the prey uninstall so it can't be uninstalled ;)

Get lads together and go knock on the door and if that lad refuses to open it then kick the door in. No ones calling the cops with a house full of stolen goods. The gardai are a waste of space for anything that matters. Get your laptop, give that lad a kicking and get out of there. I don't mean to sound aggressive but this is the real world here. Go get your stuff back.

Tell the Garda that it looked like the guy is cutting a kilo of coke in front of the laptop when you saw him the first time.

They probably would be around quick enough for this alright, but I wouldn't be too sure that the files and paperwork for the incident won't get mislaid;):p

On the other hand you may have inadvertently stumbled into the middle of a huge undercover surveillence operation involving the Guards, Customs, Revenue, DSP and maybe the FBI. Marching around to the guy's place could risk months of intricate painstaking work profiling this criminal gang.

Sure you want your laptop back but you may end up busted down to traffic or cooling your heels behind a desk until you learn that there's no I in team.

Go to the Garda station, refuse to leave without talking to someone above the rank of sergeant. Demand action or you'll take it to Joe Duffy, local TD, newspapers and Garda Ombudsman.
I like the way Joe Duffy ranked higher then the rest of those people...

He's the man who gets things done!

you can break prey easily.... log on to a boot disk and delete the exe file.

reboot and prey wont work anymore

    Hey guys,

Looking for advice on behalf of my friend.

His laptop was stolen last week. He has prey software installed on it so as soon as the robber went onto it two nights ago, prey took screen shots and google maps screenshots of exactly where he is. My friend went into the guards two nights ago with this exact information with all this on a plate for them and they do absouletely nothing, the thief is still sitting there using the laptop and googling things like 'How to format a laptop' and 'DoneDeal.ie'.

He is getting very frustrated as the guards know exactly where the thief lives and has several screenshots of him. Surely this is as good as CCTV footage?

Any advice for what his next step should be should the guards continue to do nothing?

Put note through door of the scumbags house saying "You robbed my labtop, now i know where you live. BIG MISTAKE. I will terrorize randomly you for as long as i can, unless I get my laptop back" then tell him to leave it the local guard station saying he found it. And ask the guards to drop it over to you.
