Good Chinese restaurants in Cork?

I am a student in UCC and I've tried Aroma by the opera house and found their food was a bit on the saltier side even for me (and I like salty foods).

Does anyone have good recommendations for Chinese food/restaurants in Cork?

The Wylam at Victoria Cross was always good quality. Haven't been there in many years though. Would be interested to hear how it is going nowadays.

Yuan Ming yuan in the most authentic Chinese in the city. Don't know anywhere else you can get duck tongues or chicken feet.

This is the only Chinese I'll eat in in Cork.
If you go, make sure you get the full menu.

I've noticed that the Macau casino on Patrick's Quay has a pretty interesting looking Chinese menu. Anyone been?

Panda Mama is the best in Cork by a mile, great food, great atmosphere and very reasonably priced.

While not as good the one by the Lough is also pretty tasty.

I ate in Panda Mama once when it first opened.
We were hugely disappointed. Never went back.

Have you eaten in Yuan Ming Yuan?

That's a shame, I have yet to have a bad meal there but no matter how good a restaurant is there will always be an off day / bad experience, no restaurant is perfect

Is Yuan Ming Yuan the one on the side street opposite the hotel that closed down? If so then I don't believe I have tried it. Would you recommend it?

Yuan Ming Yuan's dim sum menu is spectacular. I have a friend living in London who claims they haven't found anything as good there! I wouldn't go anywhere else.

It's on Prince's St, between Oliver Plunket St and the South Mall.

I'm a fan of both Panda Mama and YMY, but I always felt like PM is the "westernised" version of Chinese food whereas YMY is the authentic.

I have space for both in my life luckily and I'll even throw in Aroma when I want a delivery.

That was my beef with Panda Mama. Felt that it kinda promised to be a bit different from the average European Chinese but turned out to be much the same. I just don't like that style of food.
Yuan Ming Yuan does plenty of European Chinese food but has many other options too.

I find that the terms 'good' and 'chinese restaurant' are mutually exclusive.

Yuan Ming Yuan is Cork's most authentic Chinese restaurant, in my opinion, plus the staff are really nice. It's a pity that the wave of authentic Chinese restaurants in Dublin hasn't hit Cork yet.

For a "generic" Chinese, I think Panda Mama is the best, plus their lunchtime and Early Bird offers are good value. There are a lot of old, bad Chinese restaurants in Cork that have been trading on fond childhood memories for too long.

Agreed,

I've been very disappointed with a lot of the food in Cork City but Yuan Ming Yuan blew me away.

The place, the staff, the food. Best Chinese I've ever eaten anywhere.

I wouldn't consider Panda Mama generic at all, I think it is one of the more authentic places in Cork but hey if we all didn't have different opinions then this thread wouldn't exist

I would consider the place on Patrick St (upstairs) near Brown Thomas to be generic. Definitely going to give Yuan Ming Yuan a try after all the pleasant reviews in here though!

Thanks for the suggestion of Yuan Ming Yuan. I have never heard of the place. I never really found any non genric chinese food in Cork. Cannot wait to try it.
