Avoid Aprilia

So...after 6 weeks of waiting, Aprilia finally shipped my new bike. Though they seem to have difficulty telling the difference between red (which I ordered) and black (what they shipped). Sigh. I'm not gonna wait another few weeks for them to ship back the black one and send out a new one (and the risk that they might send out a pink one).

They really are useless in my opinion. Massive delays, and can't even ship the bike in the right colour. And they still insist that Bikeworld are their distributors in Ireland even after I've told them that Bikeworld haven't sold Aprilia's for years.

It's no wonder that every major dealership warned me to avoid them. I should have listened...

They are beautiful, and, in common with most good art, spends a lot of time .....immobile. Sad, but true - I have an 02 one. It took, fully, ONE YEAR to get parts for it, and that thanks to a dealer in Texas.

I tried Bikeworld. Waste of time. They don't know, and they care less. The then Ducati Dublin did fill in the missing pieces.....but lead times from Italy was absolutely appalling. Ultimate parts in the UK tried very hard fir me, but were only partially successful.

I rang the factory in Noale, direct, several times, and even actually spoke to 'customer service's at the plant, and they were condescending **** of the highest order. The couldn't give a monkey's - once the bike has left the factory, they have (your) money, and that's all they give a **** about.

As for the RSVR, it is gorgeous, but really, when did you ever here of any other brand where the press bikes, on the official launch, threw not one, but several cranks? Quality (out-of) Control.

They still can't wire a bike for ****e, and you could probably get a bulk deal on Regulator/Rectifiers......you'll need them. They know sweet FA about how to build a reliable oil pump, either.....

Still want another one though........but only if it's within a 5 minute ride if a knowledgeable dealer. So, Texas it is then.......:|

So, what ARE you going to do now? A Triumph would be a good alternative, European choice. Even a Ducati.

Bikeworld made me aware of the problems with Aprilia but assured me that getting parts is a lot easier/quicker now and they seem to have greatly improved that aspect of their business.

But, they still won't sell Aprilia's due to the long delays in actually getting them shipped.

It's Ducati Dublin who's getting this bike in for me, They are the only dealership in the country (out of 30+ I checked with) that will handle Aprilia's. Unfortunately, their only bike expert is seriously ill in hospital for a few months now, so that added to the delays. (I've been trying to get this bike since last June).

Teach yourself how to look after your bike yourself and get real familiar with ebay and you won't have a lot of hassle.

My boyfriend was quoted €12,500 to rebuild his old fireblade when a car did a u-turn into him and rebuilt it himself for €3,500 via ebay and a few american and chinese websites.

Tbf there is a huge difference between puttings parts onto a frame and regular work we would all carry out to taking a modern bike engine to pieces to do repairs on it. I would guess numerous very expensive specialist tools are required to even just take the engine apart, if it was anything like my old one.

What cost €3,500 was putting back together the entire bike, including work on the engine. Obviously there were tools involved but nothing mega expensive and nothing that wouldn't be used again (and has been plenty of times since being bought) thus justifying the cost. My reason for posting this was so that the OP realises there is an alternative (if he has the time) to being held to ransom by the Aprilia dealer and by comparison it ends up being cheaper (if you know what you're doing).

The quote was for new parts and labour. Doing the work yourself with 2nd hand parts will always be cheaper. But why didn't you BF let his insurance sort it out?

If you want to sell an expensive exotic bike you will need dealer stamps. No one will pay top Euro for a bike if they think that the owner has skimped on work when there are thousands of low mileage F(MD)SH bikes for sale across the water.

No, avoid them because this is just the beginning: if they can't get a simple thing like the colour right - I.e. take an actual order correctly - then Lord help you if you ever need anything more complicated.......like, say......, a spark plug. ?...:-)

And took six weeks to ship it. And don't even know who their distributors are in Ireland. Oh, and the whole problem with reliability and getting parts...apparently.

You bought a new Aprilia? Knowing there were dealer issues? Who did you think would look after the warranty?

Did you price buying it in the UK and paying the VAT/VRT?

As for getting the wrong colour - this is typical of bike and car manufacturers. Unless you are buying a dozen of them they don't even look at the colour required.

Well wear - stick a €20 in a jar every week just in case. Post pics when you get a chance.

It wasn't second hand parts and they were all Honda parts.

He didn't want it to go through his insurance.

He had no bother selling it for the price he wanted and it is living a happy life elsewhere now.

Last couple of times I got my bike serviced there was an RSV 1000 R in the garage, both times the engine was spread across the workbench. Both times I asked what's the story with the Aprillia, and a similar volley of curses came from the mechanic!
Mototecnic near KCR specialise in Italian bikes, I'd go there for servicing. Worth putting up with problems purely for the sound of them :D

And for the record, I bought a brand new BMW from Joe Duffy and got it in the wrong colour. It's not just bikeworld/aprillia that are incompetent. Mine had the wrong tyres on it too. Rang up to confirm them too. "Yeah, yeah, we know, we know".

If someone cuts me up with the potential to kill me the more it costs the inconsiderate pr!ck the better. Don't do them a favour as they won't learn and a nice insurance loading for several years will remind them to check before turning.

Just to clarify, I'm not buying via Bikeworld. I've never had a problem with Bikeworld. They've always treated me well, though they are a little expensive.

+1 on Moto Technic in KCR, Robbie is a sound guy and as honest as the day. He looks after my Duke and I've always been really happy with the work and the price ;)

Also the Italian Centre just off the North Circular road. I've never used them personally but have heard a lot of good things about John Elliot and as the name suggest his expertise is in all makes Italian....he obviously likes a challenge :D

Thanks for all the tips on repair/servicing locations. A great bunch of optimists here. ;)

If it's a new RSV4 or Tuono nobody has the correct diagnostics software to fix the common problems that they throw up. Only official Aprilia dealers. I asked around as was considering an RSV4 Factory but decided to hold on to my R1 and spend a few quid on tarty bits

So, are you still taking it? Or going to go for something else?

Oh still taking it. I only would have considered refusing if it was the white or silver coloured one. They really don't look good.

I bought an old 1996 Aprilia Pegaso 650 last year, and it's a pretty good bike. No parts issues at all.

    Is that relevant?

Will do. Just found out that I can collect in next Tuesday. Ducati Dublin are actually sending a guy with a van over to London to collect it. Quicker/cheaper than shipping it over.

    1 more sleep?!!

Feckin' delayed until Friday (when it's likely we will have snow!).
Seems the guy in the van couldn't get on the ferry on Friday so he only left today.

Can anything else go wrong? (well apart from the snow/ice we will no doubt have).

Awh bummer, the waiting is the worst :o Hopefully you get it on Friday and then you can spend the weekend tinkering with it and getting to know all it's ins and outs though probably not riding it if the weather turns like it's supposed to!
