I was thinking about this earlier when looking through the forum - It seems to me that Ireland has never had a wider selection of gigs to go to or events to see in its history. I mean, there are seven gig's I'll be going to between now and November, and that's not including Electric Picnic!

    What do y'all think?

Its only good if you like the bands who are playing, and I don't particularly.

I'm happy that you're happy though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

Yeah its great for sure but all the big gigs takes place in Dublin, ok the festivals are a little bit outside Dublin but most decent acts usually fly in and play the Olympia/Point/Ambassador/Village/Whelans or something. Unfortunately even though I would love to go to a lot more gigs its just too expensive to get to Dublin stay overnight, time of work etc. when you live down the country :(

Pretty damn good alright. I'm not that enthusiastic about the bigger gigs anymore though.

Love the smaller gigs run in Dalymount and stuff like that around the place. Some deadly bands floating about the Dublin scene atm.

There was a period I went to on average 1 gig a week. Not anymore though, dunno if I've gotten more picky of theres just less on. It'll pick up in November though.

Oh my! You must be really poor, or really rich to go to all of these though!

The smaller gigs in Whelan's and the likes are usually good for your money and also you support the rising acts that need a legger.

its fantastic... especially living in Dublin.
I go to gigs more than I go to the cinema.
In the past two years, I've seen nearly all the acts that make up my CD collection.
From big acts in big locations, festivals, to real gems in Whelans / The Village, I've spent a fortune... but its just so worth it! :)

Lots of gigs to choose from, less and less money in my pocket!

I wish it cost much less, the Village seemed to have increased their prices a fair bit. I dont like that!

    Aah, I guess it's for a good cause :)

we down in cork are starved of any "big" bands but do have a very good music scene of our own.there are some really good gigs in our fair city.i still hope they build that arena down by the rowing club to challenge for the bgger gigs though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

I'm not sure that arena will solve any problems, theres a big arena in Milstreet and that doesn't get anything anymore, ok it would be in the city but whether there are crowds there to fill it regularly would be another question. For example a lot of small upcoming bands e.g. Block Party, Artic Monkeys etc. etc. come over play Whelans and fly home, they could easily play a small venue in Cork but choose not to. Yeah theres a lot of music happening here at the moment, great as it is its a bit like being in the Coca Cola Championship with the Premiership happening up the road, better than nothing though.

I don't see Malcom Middleton or Sigur Ros on that list.. both of which have Dublin gigs coming up as well.

Yeah, I agree completely, it's as diverse as it's ever been, and hopefully will continue as it has been.

There are musicians around that would claim that the Irish music scene is dead. I've never quite got that.

I do wish that a little more attention was paid to the sound quality at gigs though. There's huge scope for improvement, tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Nimrod's Son

Yep, there's definitely a nice, big array of gigs to choose from out there. I'll be taking in a couple of them myself. Not as many as I'd like to though. I agree about the sound quality. There's a hell of a lot of room for improvement on that front. I'm not not gone on these outdoor gigs either. Don't think it does some acts as much justice as an indoor arena would IMO.
