I'm not bothered making out a list right now, but one game that immediately comes to mind is Freespace. Great atmosphere, storyline, sound, graphics, and action that didn't let you go until you'd finished the game :) Memories... I think I'll track down the CD and play that again.

    3) Final Fantasy VII

    1) Final Fantasy VII

It _is_ the greatest game ever made. I've never ever played a game that has touched me emotionaly or moved me so much (few movies/books have even done that), and yet the story FF7 told was amazing. It's characters 3-dimensional and moving (Barret, Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, Sephiroth, the Shin-ra people - all wonderful) The graphics for their time were astonishing. It's only fault was the sometimes annoying random battles, but other than that, it was faultless and compelling from start to end, twisting and turning, but never confusing.
Proof if ever it was needed that games are a viable artistic medium as much as novels or films (if you get the right people on board), and not just throw-away large-busomed women titilating teens as they raid tombs

    I agree FF7 rocks :D

Back in the day I loved Sabre Team and The Chaos Engine on my Amiga.

On the PC I love Half Life (who doesn't) and Homeworld (sweet game).

Not too pushed on the PS2, but I did play Oni alot.

I suspose it'd still be Civ2/3 as it's the game that I've been most addicted to.

These days SSX Tricky, and Gran Turismo 3 yank my chain. (Yeah I know that they're, like, so 5 minutes ago)

    UFO: Enemy unknown
    Quake 3 (including mods)
Uplink - Genius and pretty much unique
GTA: Vice City (far out-shone it's predecessors)
    Syndicate + American Revolt addon
Shadowman - I loved that game.

Non computer games, but still favourites
    Twister
Go - ancient chinese board game

Couldn't be bothered making another top ten. However the best game ever is FFVII. I'm playing it again and it still hasn't lost any of it's charm or soul.

    In no particular order,

Duke Nukem 3D - The graphics, the humour, the interactivity, the strippers. Fuck Doom, Duke was king.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2: An extreme sports title, with the heart of a platform game. Harks back to the days when high-scores were more important than flashy cut-scenes. Sniff.

Super Metroid: I played it for the first time around two years ago and it reminded me just how little progress has been made since the game's original release. In my opinion it's infinitely better than most games out today.

Grand Theft Auto3: Frankly, how this game can be absent from anybody's list is incomprehensable. Not so much a shot in the arm to gaming, as a great big wooden mallet to the face. Or something.

Jet Set Radio: It started the whole cel-shading bandwagon (but we can forgive it for that!), but, more importantly, the game was so incredibly funky, from the visuals to the soundtrack to the character designs, that you couldn't help but grin like a loon.

Rez: I'm normally extremely hesitant to call games art, but Rez certainly comes close. Completely linear, a lifespan of a few hours, easier than your mother, wire-frame graphics.... and yet capable of really moving you. Features some of the most beautiful moments of videogames, as well as some of the most memorable boss encounters. Perhaps the only game out for the 'next generation' systems that warrants the tag as a 'next generation' game.

Gran Turismo 2: I didn't realise how much I loved this game until my memory card corrupted and my garage was lost forever. It was like the death of a close family member.

That's only seven games, so I'll quickly mention Mario Kart, Advance Wars and Half-Life.

    And Soul Calibur.

    (And Zelda: OoT)

Forty-Forty was fantastic, extremely clever use of real world objects as a base, the person who was 'on' had to hold the pole/tree/object and shout "FORTY FORTY I SEE THE FAT FELLA TRYING TO FIT BETWEEN THE TWO WALLS". Riddled with bugs unfortunately :(

Finally someone who agrees :D i loved every minute of the story, and Sydney was easily one of the best baddies ever in a game, easilly rivalling Sephiroth. Everything about it was a classic.
Fingers crossed for a remake, soon dammit!!!

I've heard that squaresoft weren't too happy with the team that made the game because of bad sales and therefore, sadly there probably won't be a sequel. This game has been sitting in my must play pile for ages. Still from what I did play it has probably the best opening in a game ever and a strangely brilliant translation.

Some of my own (no order):

    1) Chuckie Egg - Has anyone else mentioned this? Why not? Classic!

    2) Super Mario All Stars - 'Coz it gets 4 Mario games in one. Class.

    3) Yoshi's Island 2 - Superb SNES game. A ton of great hidden extras, plus all those nifty moments when you'd turn into a helicopter, submarine, digger, etc.

    4) Half Life - Well I mean it has to come in!

    5) Syndicate - Oh the fun I had. I remember there was one mission which I completed in about two minutes but, instead of going to the pickup point, I spent the next two hours going around slaughtering the city. I got EVERY SINGLE PERSON. Teach them to mess with me.

    6) Pinball Fantasies/Pinball Dreams - Best. Pinball. EVER. Still play it through emulation.

    7) Grand Theft Auto 3 - For sheer variety and the size of a breathing city beneath you. And for sniping the head off old grannies from four floors up.

    8) Jet Set Willy - The ultimate platformer? No, but a damn good. TYPEWRITER.
