Was just reading there that the Junior players have club games on Saturday evening, every year the same story with the Juniors

Yeah we have Greg playing with them and then we've a game Saturday evening where we are stuck for players now because Barry Dwyer is gone to Boston and Kevin Dwyer is off to New York soon :o

    I was just thinking:

Cooper's footpassing from Centre Forward into Donaghy :) Something we haven't seen before really apart from 1 mintes against Tyrone. I can't wait!

With Sheehan, M. Geaney, Buckley and Gooch we have some exceptional footpassers, to ping ball into Donaghy and Geaney who are excellent in the air. BJK links really well with Donaghy, and may be a nice bet for first goal off a Donaghy assist.

The county board dont have much time for the juniors though, thats been obvious for a long time. Between fixing football the same weekend as kerry are playing hurling when there is an obvious crossover of players and this weekend, fixing a round of county league when there are 50 odd players out, or at least half playing 2 games in two days. Something needs to be changed. Its not fair on those junior players who have the chance to represent the county but also dont want to leave their clubs down on the saturday evening

Delighted to see M Griffin at full back. He is the first natural full back we have had in that position for years.

Black and white ribbons on the 2nd from left, would it be the AI Intermediate that Ardfert won ?

    Christy, thanks for the memories

A KERRY hurler who has lived in Kilkenny for the last 12 years was honoured at a function in the city on Friday night.

Christy Walsh from Kilmoyley, Ardfert, outside Tralee was recognised for his enormous contribution to Kerry hurling at the Kerry Association's annual dinner dance in Langton's hotel, John Street, Kilkenny.

Now living in Bennettsbridge, he won two All-Ireland senior inter-firm medals with Avonmore, Ballyragget and a Railway Cup medal on a Munster team that included players like Nicky English and Pat Fox.

    Taken aback

He had no idea that he was being honoured and was taken aback when his mother, Moll; sister Mary; brothers Joe and Maurice; sisters-in-law Margaret and Betty appeared at the function.

“One of Kerry's great sporting heroes he has never received the accolades he deserves for his commitment to hurling,” said John Keane, chairman of the Kerry Association in Kilkenny.

“With hands almost as big as his heart and an easy stride which belied his great speed, he played over 100 times for the senior county team and has nine All-Ireland medals at various grades; a universities championship medal; a Railway Cup medal and four senior county championship medals,” Mr Keane added.

Five years ago he was on the verge of giving up after 20 years playing with his club, Kilmoyley.

During that time he had never won a Kerry senior hurling championship.

He persevered and in the Spring of 2001, he started the routine of travelling down the 135 miles during the week to Kilmoyley and doing the 270 miles round trip again at the weekend for club matches.

Kilmoyley won the championship that year after a break of 27 years and completed the four-in-a-row in the Autumn of 2004.

    Honoured

Born in January 1962, he has played senior hurling with Kerry for 18 years

He was honoured at last year's Munster senior hurling final as one of the great players in the province not to have won a Munster medal.

He has one Railway Cup medal and a Fitzgibbon Cup medal with UCC.

He has 10 Kerry county league medals; two North Kerry championships and eight North Kerry leagues.

He won a junior county medal with Ardfert footballers and was part of the reason that they went from division 5 to Division 1 in a short space of time.

He captained the divisional team, St Brendan's in the 1992 senior football final only to be beaten by Mid-Kerry.

He won senior two All-Ireland inter-firm championships with Avonmore and one junior All-Ireland inter firm medal with the Kerry Group.

He has two All-Ireland senior B hurling championship, two All-Ireland B minor championships and one All-Ireland under-21 B championship.

He has played football with the kerry senior and junior football teams.

The late Ollie Walsh, the former trainer of the Kilkenny team wanted Christy to join the Kilkenny panel in 1991.

Christy Walsh was taken by surprise when his achievements were called out in front of 240 people who were present to welcome the Sam Maguire cup; captain of the Kerry team, Dara 'Cinnide and footballer of the year, Toms 'S to Kilkenny.

Christy received a Seiko watch from his friend and vice-chairman of the association, Michael O'Connor from Ballyduff Co Kerry and the Freshford Road, Kilkenny.

It was inscribed with the words: “Christy, thanks for the memories,”

Christy's wife Trish received a pendant made by James Mary Kelly from Kerry Association committee member,

Nice touch,Christy Walsh a legend of the small ball game in our county.

Very nice story that about Christy Walsh. Most clubs all along West coast have "the Dublin lads" who train on their own in Dublin and drive down for a Friday or Saturday training session or a game Sunday. Know a player did such a trip from 19 - 32 years of age barely missing a weekend. Wouldnt have been any mileage. Clubs shouldnt bother with 100 euro a session outside managers. Look after players who support playing base of the club from often 150 miles away.

Kerry game now throwing in at 3.45 due to crowd congestion

Watching this challenge game that Donegal and Armagh are playing, the Kerry Tipp game should be more entertaining but its not on TV,not even on live online.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,193 ✭✭✭✭Kerrydude1981

Gooch is back juts stuck a point,

Kerry now leading 1-04 to 1-02

After that fast start by Tipp we seem to be getting into it now

Sounds like a cracker of a game.

    Half time in Thurles

    Tipp 2-04 Kerry 2-06

Barry John Keane and Paul Geaney getting the goals

Full back line in bits. O Se & Griffin decorated.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,193 ✭✭✭✭Kerrydude1981

We are up now 2-11 to 2-04

Lads on the Radio saying Tipp are sticking with the man for man marking at the back,no extra men coming back and giving Kerry plenty of room which is suicidal

James O Donoghue coming now for BJK

Final score Kerry 2-14 Tipp 2-8

Comfortable from the lads. Poor start, Tipps pace and hunger under the breaking ball caused us all sorts of trouble.

Mark Griffin cleaned out in the first half. Aidan O'Mahoney, and Shane Enright caught for pace for the second goal.

First few minutes reminded me of the League game against Cork. If we start like that on the 5th of July Cork will have us beaten before we know it.

Gooch was rusty, but played some sublime passes. Paul Geaney ans BJK were good and unselfish. Donaghy was in and out of the game, and targeted as usual.

Referee was horrendous, for both sides giving phantom frees, frees and line balls the wrong way. He allowed a blatant kick on Peter Crowley go unpunished. He let a man rugby tackle Gooch, and gave Donaghy a card instead.

The targeting of James' shoulder when he came on was seriously low. Real junior B stuff from the Tipperary number 3 and 7. Donaghy was rightly livid and was close to being sent off over it.

Honestly, there's no chance of that happening.

If Kerry start off so ponderously it could easily happen.

I'm hoping it won't, but with Corks forwards, they can kill any team if they get the possession.

I'd hope Kerry's backs will play more like the second half, where Marc really got on top and Crowley tightened everything up.

It should be tighter than last year but very hard to see cork winning. Kerry gave weaknesses but we won't exploit them enough.on the other hand kerry will exploit our failings and punish us.

Afraid not. Possession is our problem. We can't kick long as we undoubted lose possession and have a keeper who is crap at it anyway. So instead we can go short and try to work the ball through all 15 opposing players with an end result of, our full toward line being starved of possession. This is what inevitably happens against the better teams. Add in the FACT that our defence is ALL over the place and ye will tear them to shreds.

I honestly can't think of a worse set up than our footballers currently, despite having some cracking inside forwards. Add the importance of tactics to a match like this and we will certainly be found wanting there as well.
Never been more certain of a hammering unfortunately.

Even with Cork bringing back Alan O'Connor, who's a huge presence in midfield, I'm alot more confident in Maher & Moran imposing themselves than what they served up in the league, where Maher seemed to play well before going off, before Dave upped it a bit before tiring in a big way. Cork, when they dominate midfield, can supply their forwards and cause wreck. I don't see them dominating in Killarney but who knows.

The other side to Cork that I saw in the league was their half backs causing trouble by attacking and putting Buckley & Sheehan under pressure due to their lack of pace. Something that's worth noting is that Kerry at the moment have serious competition for the half forward berths with Walsh, Darran, Geaney, Cooper, Sheehan, Sean O'Brien & BJK competing for spots - assuming our FF line will be Geaney - Star - JOD

The other thing is, with BJK playing well yesterday & throughout the league - do you drop him? I'd like to see him accommodated with James returning but I don't think he's as effective from half forward & we've seen before that Fitz obviously sees Geaney as playing an important role

very happy with yesterday, we played much better than i expected.

job done, onwards to Killarney now in 3 weeks.

at that level its always going to happen. Junior B's wouldnt even have dawned on them to do it. you can be sure that if the shoe was on the other foot the likes of O'Mahony and Crowley would have done similar
