Cans in public are a bit much IMO. Bottles look classier. Not a very logical argument, but I agree with myself.

Not only do they look classier, they make better weapons too ;)

Was parked across from my local last Sunday around 2.30pm and this lad staggered out the door of the pub and up the street to his house; 3 doors away. He dropped the key on the ground; stumbled bit and staggered back to the pub. Did I frown upon his behavior? No; but I had a little chuckle.

I'd say its probably fine here in a park in Ireland as long as it doesn't get raucous and end up with the Gardai crashing the party!

I think over here it looks really bad. There's something of an assumption that if you see someone drinking on the street they must be a properly desperate alco. There's a presumption that the person couldn't wait to get somewhere comfortable like at home or in the pub before drinking. It's very bad social form probably more so because the people who do drink on the street over here are mostly all bums and riff raff. You'd be automatically giving that impression. Also Ireland does have a massive drinking problem. Plenty of people just destroy themselves all too often thinking it's all great craic. Some of these guys are going to wake up one day and realise they're bums.
We're not that open minded a country. We're progressive in some ways and way backward in others and a lot of society is still a bit look at the neighbors if you know what I mean. A bit Catholic, with all the shame shame shame.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not refering to people popping down to the spanish arch or to a local park and having one or two. That's completely grand and I fancy the arch in good weather. I'm talking about drinking in between pubs and the like which was I think what the OP had in mind.

a can in the hand is grand as long as you're not walking around with a 6 pack in a spar bag you're grand

No national law ,but local authorities have their own by-laws.
    Some extracts from Dublin City's........

" Subject to sections 9 and 11 hereof no person or persons shall –

    (1) Consume or attempt to consume intoxicating liquor on a road or in a public place within the functional area of the Council "

    Fines
"The amount of the fixed payment applicable to the fixed payment notice shall be €75. In the event of non-payment within the specified period a person or persons shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €1,900"

I'm teaching English in Japan atm. Drinking in public is completely legal here. Being drunk in public is also ok. I've never seen anyone abusing the drinking in public thing - apart from maybe the few other Irish people I saw on St. Patrick's Day ;) After work we meet nearby and have "street beers" outside a convenience store, while waiting for everyone to show up and then we'll move on to our destination!

  • We would always bring a can or bottle for the walk/taxi into town so yeah do it a bit. Don't see a problem with it at all in that sort of situation. I don't think the Guards would bother with you in this situation to be honest, I've never had hassle anyway.

Also being from Galway there are a number of events like the races where half the city is a designated drinking zone so I have drank a lot on the streets etc though its slightly different in this situation.

It's frowned upon here because the only people you ever see doing it are the kind of knacks that you'd normally go out of your way to avoid.

Yeah well this attitude annoys me. I'm not an alcoholic I just like the taste of beer and sometimes drink outside. You are being judgemental.

My opinion annoying you does not mean that it is okay for you to label me as judgemental.

A few cans in public places is fine as long as you're keeping to yourself.

In my experiences, I've only ever seen homeless people drinking in the street though. And they're almost always nasty.

Just for arguments sake, how do you drink when you're out and about?

Are you just drinking while going from A to B, or what?

Jesus, In Berlin you're seen as a freak if you're on the way to a party and DON'T have a beer in your hand.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Unless there is a sign saying no street drinking Zone OP, then it is perfectly within thE law to crack open a can. Thought it was strange when I moved over to see blokes in suits having a can walking down the street when in Ireland its associated with skangers.

Nothing like grabbing a cold can on a sunny Friday evening walking home from work.

Usually have a can or two on the last bus into town on a Friday or Saturday night.I wouldn't walk down a main street in Dublin swigging a can though. That's what naggins and bottles of coke are for!

Have been stopped a few times by the Gardai for drinking in public. One time me and my mate were walking down to the bus stop at 11pm one night and a squad car pulled over with blue lights flashing,3 massive guards got out and told me that this will be the most expensive beer I'd ever have cos it's a €65 fine for drinking in public.I was very apolgetic and polite with them etc and they took my name and address, but I never heard anything about it again.

Another sunny day me and my mate were drinking beside her apartment at the canal and two plain clothes Gardai stopped their car, searched us and took our names, but told us that we were okay to drink our cans there as long as we put them in the bin when we were finished.Probably depends on how sound the guard that stops you is I suppose. And how much you co-operate with them too.

A few years ago I had 'outside drinks' with some French friends in Temple Bar. Guards came up and started asking us questions. I handed one of them my beer can and he said the same as above. He just wanted to make sure we weren't hammered and potentially dangerous. As soon as he saw we were okay he just asked that we dispose of the cans properly; the problem with public boozing is that there is always some sub-normal halfwit who will find a way to abuse it to the point where it's no longer deemed worth the hassle.

I think its grand if its a special occasision like halloween, paddys day or sunny.

I drink in public all th time. Its not unusual at all in Galway. Especially if the weathers nice. I always have a can or two on the walk into town on a night out.

I don't care if someone is drinking a can of coke while walking down the road, so why should I care that they're drinking a can of beer. People are capable of acting the spa regardless of the ingredients in their liquid refreshment.

Just walked home from work in 27 degree heat with a can. No one batted an eye lid. Gotta love the continent.

    Which continent?

years ago everybody could crack open a can in a park or just casually strolling,i dont see it as much anymore due to tough laws coming in,you get fined a grand i think for being spotted out drinking in public,if youre a first time offender they might let you off,but its cleaned up the streets a lot,i know it can be very intimidating walking alone and seeing a gang of guys drinking..

The kiosks that sold the tickets for the trains sold beer and you'd see many people having a beer on the train platform on their way home from work.

When I was in Hamburg, I recall guys having a can waiting for the train on the way TO work! But thats maybe 10years back or more.

I can't believe some of the responses in this thread! I've sat in Eyre Square in Galway drinking during the day being passed by several gardai who didnt even give us a second glance. Some people who drink on the street are hobos yeah but im not a ****ing hobo and I don't look like one.

dont have a problem with public drinking but it always seems to get out of hand here in Ireland & thats why alot of people have a problem with it here imo. The Germans, Frence, Spanish seem to have a much more mature attitude to drinking than we do full stop. If alot of people didnt act the maggot everytime we have the opportunity to drink outside here I dont think it would be any problem

Problem is there are no opportunities, so then everyone lashes in to it because of the novelty factor. If you could drink anywhere you wanted, at any time, people would stop making such a big deal out of it and there'd be far less drama.

I dont think so tbh, that sounds very idealistic in this country. We drink far more than Europeans on average and allowing people to drink anywhere, anytime would encourage that even more. I for one wouldnt feel comfortable on the streets if people were drinking all the time

It's a bit of a preconceived notion that you'd have a reason to by intimidated by a group of people drinking outside.

Is there a by-law on the quays in Dublin that allows drinking?

No, I think that applies just to heroin.
