First thing to determin is it leaking or burning the oil. Check for leaks and if none is found chances are its burning it. If its burning oil it's probably piston rings or valve stem oil seals or something like that. Whatever it is it involves a lot of engine work. So do the basics look for leaks. Check the exhaust on start up for blue smoke and let us know how you get on. If your feeling really brave try a compression test on each cylinder.

The 1.8vvti engines used in these cars did have problems up to, and a bit, beyond 2003 which required the replacement of the "short engine" or block with a redesigned unit. The problem involved the choking of the oilways in the piston with carbon IIRC. You'll find more on google. The symptom was oil consumption which would go to excessive pretty quickly. Has your engine been using oil before this?

Anyway, given that your symptoms include overheating and oil use, it points towards Head Gasket failure. This may have been caused by a faulty thermostat in the first instance which caused the car to overheat and then blow the head gasket.

Is there any oil in the coolant? Mayonaise type substance under the rad cap?

Has the oil been thinned by the coolant?

The failure to start may be because of low compression because of the headgasket failure. Take it to a mechanic - it's a pretty big job and hope that there isn't any further damage to the engine other than just the Head gasket.
