It looks like the NCT and other measures don't go far enough.

    Thousands of 'unsafe vehicles' impounded

MORE than 117,000 dangerous and uninsured vehicles have been impounded by the gardai over the past six years, with one in 10 being non-Irish registered cars.

Some 104,725 vehicles were Irish registered, while another 13,005 were non-Irish registered cars. Many of the vehicles would have been seized after they were abandoned by joyriders or were judged to be a safety threat to motorists.

The number of non-Irish registered cars being seized has increased significantly since 2006 when gardai were given extended powers to immediately impound uninsured cars driven by foreign nationals in a bid to cut road crashes.

The figures were released by the Department of Justice to the Labour Party, amid separate efforts by the Department of Transport to clamp down on the number of write-offs currently on the roads.

Last year represented the largest haul of vehicles by gardai, with 28,270 vehicles being seized, 3,367 of which were non-Irish registered cars.

In the first four months of this year alone, the clampdown has continued apace with 11,207 vehicles impounded. The garda blitz had yielded the highest number of seizures in Dublin North Central and Dublin West.

Last night, Labour's Tommy Broughan said there was concern about the number of burnt out joyriding vehicles being abandoned in city and urban areas."There's a surprisingly large number of vehicles being seized and you have to look at the figures. It's clear that there is a massive effort to clamp down," he said.

    Certificate

Under the Road Traffic Act, gardai can impound vehicles which display no motor insurance policy, until such time as a certificate is produced.

Similarly, the gardai can impound any vehicle which has not been taxed for a period of two months or more.

In each case, the owner is liable for all charges and costs incurred by the gardai in the car's removal and storage.

Insurance companies had complained there was an increased risk that people in collisions involving non-national drivers would not receive sufficient compensation from the driver's insurance.
