There was a big update to the beta the other day, only got around to trying it out last night.

They've improved combat a lot, by adding more feedback and changing the pacing. It's a little slower, and much easier to manage party members and abilities, although some of the cooldown times for both weapons and abilities are quite silly at the moment. The quest system has been cleaned up nicely, and they've done something to the XP system so that while combat still doesn't give you XP, it's nevertheless doled out more regularly (I think you get a portion for each time a quest is updated, which is nice) so you keep that feeling of progress and advancement.

The fixed quests meant I could actually complete some. I was unreasonably delighted to get a little piggy as a pet for completing the ogre quest. I was finally able to explore the main dungeon quest too, and I was pleasantly... well, not surprised, because I had high expectations for Obsidian's writers. Pleasantly satisfied? There's at least one very interesting god in this game's pantheon, and he's kind of a c*nt.

I also discovered the Deep Wounds debuff down there, and it's broken to bejaysus at the moment, one archer can kill your whole party in seconds if your cleric doesn't spend all his/her time protecting from debuffs and healing constantly, which might be workable against one archer on his own, but when he's got friends it's just too much to handle. Lot of people complaining about poison as well, although I think that's much easier to deal with. At least there are antidote potions.

If each update improves the game at this rate, it'll be an absolute gem on release. Still a load of butthurt Baldur's Gate fans whining about things like Might covering both melee and spell damage, but they're best ignored. The system's shaping up well.

And now you can watch an hour of gameplay footage. Looks very good, and definitely looks like Infinity Engine 2.

It has got a M rating.
    Pillars of Eternity

    Platform: Macintosh, Linux, Windows PC

    Rating Category: Mature Rating Symbol

Content Descriptors: Blood, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Violence

Rating Summary: This is a role-playing game in which players assume the roles of heroes exploring a fantasy world. From a ¾-overhead perspective, players traverse dungeons/crypts, interact with different characters, and engage in various quests. Players use swords, axes, and magic spells to kill human enemies and fantastical creatures (e.g., dragons, trolls, ogres). Battles are accompanied by slashing impact sounds and frequent blood-splatter effects. Some levels depict chamber floors covered in large pools of blood. During the course of the game, players can interact and purchase services from a prostitute—no sexual act is ever depicted. The dialogue can also reference sexual material (e.g., “The prostitute holds her hips, thrusting her chest forward as you come near her” and “But if he spreads a rumor that her lover has just visited a brothel and acquired a pox on his loins, she'll end it on her own.'). The word “f**k” appears in dialogue.

Yeah, that's about as cheap as you'll get it. I'll pick it up later today, and probably get it from there or G2A.

    20 quid kickstarter backer, losers.

I'm kind of excited. I'm more excited for Tides of Numenera but that doesn't even have an official launch date yet.

I have one or two other that's similar length as well; but being Kickstarter for me it was a donation at the time that might give me a game in the future :P

Forgot I even backed this, it has been getting rave reviews from people who have it already, looking forward to putting some time into it this weekend, if it can keep me away from FF Type-0 and Bloodborne next week it will speak volumes about how good it is.

    Has it been that long?

I backed it for $20, looking like it will be well worth that :D

The wait is finally drawing to a close... And I'm going on holiday for a week and a half on Sunday. Fingers crossed this works on my Surface, so I can drive Mrs Raphael nuts by refusing to do anything while we're away!

Sure that's the point of going on holiday to exotic places......to spend it in the hotel room playing games. :D

Pre-load is a go, all 18GB of it!

Keys for Steam and GOG available on the backers site. I'm opting for no cloud saves or automatic updates and going with the guys who have no DRM and believe a dollar is a different unit of currency to a euro. i.e. GOG.

Ha! Not sure why I quoted you! Had meant it to be a normal reply.

Don't worry, your choice of provider is fine with me :)

Activated on Steam and Preload is on progress. Only 17 hours to go.

Edit: That's till it unlocks, not on the preload. That would be some disgraceful internet.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 22,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

It says the game unlocks in approx. 7 hours...what the hell? I was sure it was midnight. Need to try and change my plans so :P

And I've only now realised it was supposed to be out today.

Polygon has an article on character classes /builds (specifically how Pillars is trying to avoid needing the traditional Fighter / Priest / Rogue teams:

I admire their aim but I have misgivings about their solution. All attributes matter to all classes. I enjoy having to have each character be a specialist. Oh well we'll see how it works out.

Reviews are looking amazingly good, and PcGamer gave it 92%.Some pretty big spoilers in that review apparently, so be warned.

Reviewing very well so far, most reviews are saying it is the Baldur's Gate sequel we deserved and never got.

    RPS:

It’s a triumph. A wonderful, enormous and spellbinding RPG, gloriously created in the image of BioWare’s Infinity classics, but distinctly its own. A classic in every sense.
    Videogamer:

Pillars of Eternity is modern, while evoking the past. It’s accessible, but satisfyingly complex. Its quality is undeniable, and it’s particularly heartening to see Obsidian, the underdog RPG studio with a string of thrown-bones and rough diamonds behind it, pour its sweat and passion into something they obviously love – and utterly nail it.
Editor's Note: Despite playing Pillars of Eternity for 26 hours, and despite loving it like his own, Jim's not ready to put a score on his review just yet, as he hasn't finished the game. When he finally does so, sometime in 2143, we will update accordingly.

    PC Gamer - 92/100

This is a big, fat, deep adventure that lets you carve your own unique path through a fantasy world that’s been brilliantly brought to life with rich, evocative writing. It’s a game steeped in a bygone era of computer RPG design, but somehow it doesn’t feel archaic. Obsidian have always been bound to other peoples’ worlds—Fallout, Dungeons & Dragons, Star Wars, South Park—but in creating their own from scratch, they’ve made not only their best game to date, but one of the best RPGs on PC.

    Eurogamer - Recommended

It's an RPG with design firmly rooted in nostalgia, but one that absolutely doesn't rely on it to be enjoyable today. Instead, it's both a great reminder of why those games worked so well, and a brand new adventure well worth the hours upon hours (upon hours upon hours) that it takes to pick away at its secrets and its world.

    Gamewatcher - 9/10

All you really need to know though, is this; Pillars of Eternity is a triumph. If you’re a backer and a fan of those classic Infinity Engine games, you’re in for a real treat, a smart and complex adventure that will keep you entertained and absorbed for possibly the rest of your life, and certainly until the already announced expansion pack comes out. Even those who never got on with those classic games should give it a go, because there’s a tonne of smart design choices in here that smooth out the rough edges that might have kept you away before. A superb introduction to a fascinating new fantasy world. Can’t wait to see where in the world of Eora we get to go next.

    Gamereactor 8/10

"A new cult RPG (if a bit too much homage/conservative, would be great with some more own risks while keeping the classic style)"

    Escapist - 5/5

Bottom Line: It's the best new, isometric RPG to come out in years.

Recommendation: While Pillars of Eternity is certainly banking on a nostalgic fan base, it's still an excellent RPG in its own right. It's a game rich with player agency, giving you tons of control to craft your story or explore different solutions to the presented problems. You know, actual roleplaying not simply a game with a leveling and stat system stapled on.

    PC Games (GE) - 91/100

    IGN (RU) - 10/10

    Everyeye (IT) - 9.3/10

    IGN (IT) - 9.4/10

    PCGamesN - 10/10

Obsidian had a daunting task before them: to make a spiritual successor to a series of games that are inextricably tangled up in nostalgia, over a decade after the height of those games’ popularity. This is not the Baldur’s Gate of 2015, it’s Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, the best parts of the lot of them wrapped up in something new and brilliant. And before you venture forth, don’t forget to gather your party.
