Just wondering should the title of this thread be changed to japan earthquake rather than Tokyo earthquake?? It seems other areas of japan have suffered a lot more so maybe just use japan to cover the whole country?

  • This all seems so surreal... :(

    Footage of it hitting hand.

    Horrific!

    Any boards.ie users out there?
    Anyone with family/friends there?
    Thoughts and prayers with them.

I agree. The earthquake was actually centered further north of Tokyo - the city of Sendai seems to be the worst affected. Tokyo felt a bad earthquake but it's epicentre wasn't focused there. Apparently Tokyo is suffering more from the halting of transport and power outages etc. than actual death and devastation.

There are several of boards.ie users out there, that I'm aware of anyway. I've come in contact with them via Anime & Manga and the proposed Japanese Culture forum. I remember being surprised by the amount of Irish people living there. I really hope they're all okay.

Just heard on the news that the tsunami started half an hour after the earthquake happened.

Just noticed Google home p[age has tsunami alert on it. fair play.

Even the West coast of America is on tsunami warning!

That would be a total disaster. Small island nations would be wiped off the map in minutes.

    God!

Don't have access to a TV, and can't view any of the footage online.

What are the chances of waves hitting the Irish Coast? (My geography is also terrible!)

My sympathy to anyone to affected, and hope everyone with people there gets word from them soon.

Is it just me, or has there been a lot of disasters in the last year?

And the thing is, these island nations are so small and isolated, where can the people go?? God help them.

It seems really surreal. I'm watching it on CNN. They showed a huge whirlpool earlier - I have never seen anything like it.

BBC just showed Sendai airport being swallowed up. Shocking.

Just goes to show that however bad things are in this country at least we don't have natural disasters to deal with.

Could see an aftershock occurring there on CNN - the footage of the water gushing under that bridge. You can see the water creeping onto the bridge, and there are still cars on it :(

I saw this on my iphone just as I was going out to college this morning and only got onto a feed about 15 minutes ago

I am in absolute shock at what is happening on Japan, I can only hope for the best. :(

Dont worry we are perfectly ok here. We are extremely lucky you have no idea.

Zero chance. The whole of America is in the way and we're nowhere near the Pacific Ocean anyway.

    Amazing footage from CNN!

    Poor feckers!:(

8.9 is f*ckin massive. And each of the aftershocks have been pretty big, the smallest being 5.7Mw. If there's one country that can handle it, its Japan. But some of them islands will get washed away.

    EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
    SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

in fairness there is no point in posting the sismological data as nobody here will have a clue what it means and it just makes this page stupidly hard to navigate on a mobile device.

Put the link and a description instead.

Would the people have known after the earhquake that there was going to be a tsunami? Excuse my ignorance, but the earthquake in NZ recently didn't result in a tsunami.

Just wondering how much warning, if any, the people had to get to higher ground?

Zero chance. The whole of America is in the way and we're nowhere near the Pacific Ocean anyway.

Figured that, just wasn't sure if waves were being bounced around.

Apparently the first tsunami wave hit Sentai port about half an hour after the earthquake. So those people had very, very little time to evacuate. The meterologists would probably not have predicted it in time.
