Hello,

Im wondering if anyone could help me. I would like to crimp some rj11 connectors to cat5e cable I have that ive used with rj45 connectors. For those cables it was just simply following 568A/B wiring standard. My question is, if I use cat5e cable and crimp rj11 connectors on the end should i use 4 wires as the rj11 connectors i bought have 4 pins, even though i think its only middle two pins that are used? is there any benefit in using 4 wires? Also should i swap pin 2 and 3 on one end as other premade cables ive seen seem to swap the inside pins. Should pin 2 and 3 should go to 3 and 2 on other end? Thanks for any help

Its RJ9 connectors we most commonly use here, least if my memory serves me right. 45 is 8 pin, 11 is 6 pin and 9 is 4pin. The irish POTS network is a very simple two wire one so they're really what matters, and polarity isnt a big deal.

My knowledge is a little lacking, so just refer to this incredibly helpful post from '05:

Another option is to buy a few breakout boxes (€2-3 each), and terminate the Cat cable to these. Then use a standard RJ lead from the box to the phone.

Cat 5e is not the most flexible cable, and not designed to be continuously moved , not an issue if the phone is fixed, may be an issue if the phone gets moved a bout a lot on the desk though.
