Its not the fact that he cant code the key. its the fact that your orignal was stolen and the thief can come back and steal your car. he can re-issue you an original but the reciever is the same. rather not use the same code as the previous key imo.

When I worked for a Mercedes dealership, 10 years ago, they had the facility to disable a key that had been lost/stolen. I'd make enquiries on the VW enthusiast fora and at other dealerships before coming to a decision.

Most mechanics are not able to code in new keys to any of the VAG range, it is a specialist job.

Coding the key is a two stage affair because there are two seperate systems involved, namely central locking and immobiliser.

The central locking, i.e. the functioning of the remote fob buttons is simple enough to do and most garages or specialists can do this.

The immobiliser is a different matter. To code the new key to the immobiliser a security code is required. This code is not available even to the dealer workshop. The dealer has to put the car online to the VAG server to get it coded. However there are a few specialists who can read the security code from the car and code the key.

It is possible to wipe the old key data from the car so the remote wil not work and the immobiliser will not release. the blade in the key would still work to open the door and turn the ignition unless you change the locks too.

I think in most cases like this your house insurance should cover the cost of replacing the locks/keys etc.

I Have done everything through the Volkswagen dealer and he CAN NOT even pro gramme in the first key, i was led to believe he could hook up to Volkswagen after all thats who he works for, Code the key get the immobilizer pin and that was that.
He says he has to replace the steering column and the receiver inside the car.
    He's having a laugh.
