A good few. Can't remember them all but Fling, Prodigal Blues, Queen Elvis are a few I remember - Think it's the Salthill Community stage but can't find info on it...

EDIT: Found this page can't find a direct link

Ha. So much painting going on round town I definate would believe it. Never new Galway had so many painters. And painting in the rain. That's a first

I know it's free but, will we need any form of ticket at all for Saturday night? Can't wait for Maverick Sabre :D Been following him for over 2 years now and have seen him rise from nobody to UK's freshest voice at the moment.

Galway bay hotel put up an ad for the red arrows coming, i questioned it and they said they rang the VOR Lets do it crowd and confirmed they would be here, unless there was a mix up in communication. Pretty sure someone said they were in the UK?

Anywho, got a couple of photos before work this evening :)

They seem to have a very busy schedule but I don't see Galway on it anywhere...

The Red Arrows are not in Galway for the Volvo Race :(, the only display I can see is by the Air Corps on Saturday 7th at 3-45pm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 501 ✭✭✭Aiel

No Red Arrows this year but an Irish Air Corp display and a possible appearance by a very cool aircraft(non military btw, before the Gaaw crowd start moaning again).

Comon give us a hint if you know, prop or rotor aircraft put it out there so people will know, no point in keeping it under wraps. Who cares about the gaaw shower.

Any ideas what time the boats are arriving at Tuesday?

Are we talking during the day or Wednesday a better bet?

It's a bit early at the minute, by Sunday we will have a pretty good idea when they will be arriving.

On the radio this morning Keith Finnegan said that with the winds the way they are, the boats could be arriving as early as 03.00 Hrs tuesday morning. I feel another all nighter coming on....

Here's a link for the expected weather over the course of the event, same information used by the boats i believe.

I think it's safe to say at this stage that we will not have the blue skies of the last Volvo stopover.

Very few of the small tents along the docks compared to 2009

Looks a bit that way alright, but they've been filling in a lot of pot holes etc.and it doesn't take that long to throw one of those small tents up and they've got a couple of days left yet. Think the Global village is in danger of dragging some people over there, although on the other hand, if the weather isn't too good I would think people will tend to stay nearer town.

Just found this webcam with a better view of the docks than the one usually seen. Seems to have a delay of about 5 mind but refreshes every 5 sec.

    Hi Af.
Saturday would be the best day if you are interested in the boats and the race. They will depart the Docks at 10:30am, race from 13:00 to 14:50 followed by the final prize giving at the Docks. Then Sharon Shannon and a 42 piece Orchestra among others will provide free entertainment.

The traffic is likely to be animal around town, so if coming from Dublin, I would advise you to use the 'Park and Ride' at Ballybrit Racecourse and use public transport to the Docks or Salthill.
    Details from Just Mary here.

Thanks so much for the info. I'll try to head down on saturday for the race as I've really been looking forward to this for a good while.
I'll probably have to leave early to get there in time to find a parking spot and such I guess...

Would you be able to see the race from the dock?

You wont see the race from the Docks. If the course is the same as last time then the best place will be on the hill beside Silverstrand beach, the beach is about half a mile outside the city past the Prom at Salthill. The boats will be right in front of you at that point. If you cant get out there then Blackrock at one end of the Prom might do for it aswell. If i was you i'd try get to Silverstrand beach and wait for the boats to come near there then watch them racing and make your back towards the Docks and city centre for Sharon Shannon later that eve-just a suggestion.

Don't forget it's not this Saturday 30th, it's the Saturday July 7th just in case their was any confusion.

I know this is off topic but I really want the salthill airshow to come back. It brings a lovely crowd and very good atmosphere to about the place.

Just me or does the docks area still look a bit like there's nothing happening in two days time?? I know a lot of the equipment and stalls will be put up over the next day or two but I would have kind of thought the place would be pretty much complete by now.

Also, not to be a negative nelly, but there is just no way this will be as good as 2009. Even with clear skies promised later in the week, there won't be the heatwave we got last time and I think the sort of surprise element (at least for me and other uninformed souls) with 2009 is definitely not going to be repeated as there is an incredible amount of hype being associated with the event this time around. That said, I hope it's a great success and I will certainly be making the most of it.
