Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    is there that much of a difference in performance?

    both have
    4bg ram
    dual core 2.1ghz 3mb
    250GB HD

    XPS -> 880E
    15.4" screen
    8600m gt gpu
    9cell battery

    Vostro -> 640E
    17" screen
    8600m gs gpu
    6cell battery

    Better battery life and graphics card in the xps. If you are playing games or need the extra juice then go with the xps.

    The vostro is considerably bigger at 17". And are the processors the same model?
    I'd probably go with the xps if it were me.

    Im inclined to go with the XPS also, i willl be playing games on it but nothin thats requires extreme performance.

    ye the cpu's are the same

    The XPS should score around 4600 3DMark06, and the Vostro around 3500. That's only a rough indication of gaming performance, but you can take it that the XPS will perform roughly 30-50% better in games. The 8600M GT has twice the stream processors of the 8600M GS.

    Neither of them will fly through current games, but they'll both play older games at high settings and current games at medium/low settings.
