Kid Loco, is that cool clued-up cat who spins up a mess of french-fried soul
and picaresque Parisian passion. Hailing from Paris, Jean-Yves Prier, as
his mum knows him, butters up a collection of headphone-romancing
blue-grey-smoky-hazed tripped-up hop, pasting his big fat really-doe mix up
into something stylish which is appealing to indie rockers, b-boys and the
hip/chic brigade in equal messures. Kid Loco's "A Grand Love Story" gained massive
kudos upon its release in 1998 brimming with lush strings and murky bass
riffs making it a beautifully crafted, cinematic-sounding masterpiece. His compilations (DJ Kicks and Jesus life for children under 12 inches) are refreshing in their
diversity and he has remixed acts such as Mogwai, Pulp, Cinematic Orchestra,
St Etienne, The Pastels, Stereolab and Talvin Singh to name but a few. His second
studio album "Kill Your Darlings"‚ displays his love for angst driven
indie rock with recent production work fully confirming his standing as someone with an ear for gorgeous melodies, laid-back sexy sounds and stunning soulful textures. Kid Loco's live and DJ sets are also legendary for their underlying grooves and eclectic mix . The most recent release
"LateNightTales; Symphonic Tall Stories For The Small Hours" is a combination of tracks sure to twist even the straightest of heads. This album release features remixes and bizarre, intriguing reworkings which is his addition to the popular "Another Late Night" series.

WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS HELMET-WEARING BLUESMAN BOB LOG?

A mysterious helmet-wearing bluesman who counts BRMC, The BellRays and the legendary Tom
Waits among his friends and fans is causing palpitations in the music industry as many try to work out his true identity.

His name is Bob Log III and he is a one-man band, reputedly hailing from Tucson, Arizona. He
performs dirty old-school blues with titles including 'Boob Scotch', 'Drunk Stripper' and 'Wag Your
Tail Like A Dog In Back Of A Truck'. He also claims to have lost a hand when a child, only to have it replaced with a monkey paw - which encourages his style of guitar playing. His face is always
obscured by a helmet with his visor pulled down.

Rumours have started to circulate that he is anyone from Tom Waits to one of the Strokes.

His new album 'Log Bomb' is just released through Fat Possum Records. He will arrive into Europe in May when interested parties can get a closer look and try to uncover exactly who he is. The spectacle of this man in a helmet balacing a lady on each knee whilst playing slide, kick drum and hollerin his telephone mic is not to be missed.

TOM WAITS ON BOB LOG III:
In the April 24-May 1 issue of Time Out London, Tom Waits is asked who he is listening to right
now. He says, "Well, I really like Wu Tang Clan, those guys kill me. And then there's this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He's this little kid -- nobody ever knows how old he is -- wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can't see his face, and plays slide guitar. It's just the loudest strangest stuff you've ever heard. You don't understand one word he's saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That's what I aspire to basically."

"He's a slide playin, blues-hollerin one man band who sings about breasts in liquor" NME

    WHO IS THE LONESOME ORGANIST?

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jeremy Jacobsen, aka the Lonesome Organist. Jacobsen, an accomplished pianist and organist, is a jaw dropping mass of musical talent with an overactive imagination. "Forms and Follies" (out now on Thrill Jockey Records) is the third album by the musical phenom the Lonesome Organist which is accompanied by a flip book, so the listener at home can wallow in the splendor. The songs on the album feature the Lonesome Organist playing drums, guitar, singing, and playing keys all at once. It was antics such as these that drew attentions of fans such as Tom Waits and David Bowie. For the first time however, the Lonesome Organist was not entirely alone, as bassist Nick Macri (Bobby Conn) joined on bass. Pre-recording the old fashioned way, the album was scored and arranged on paper before entering the studio, with an emphasis on melody. A truly singular artist with a taste for the vaudevillian, the Lonesome Organist manages to reinvent himself with every release, expanding his musical forms far beyond the novelty of their delivery.

DAVID BOWIE ON THE LONESOME ORGANIST:
"The Lonesome O plays (takes breath) drums, percussion, organ, harmonica, whistle, tap shoes, saxophone and vocals, among other things, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. I kind you not! Fabulous stuff with lovely line in titles. How about Balloon Race Phenomenon or Fly On My Plate? Try the album 'Cavalcade' on Thrill Jockey. Yes, it's the same label as MOM, but if this looks like an ad for T Jockey it's because they couldn't put out a bad record even if their ears were lopped off." David Bowie, MOJO, July 2002.

Other upcoming gigs include Oh Susanna, The Izzys, Twisted Nerve night feat Misty Dixon/Aidan Smith/The Jukes/Andy Votel, The Hanson Brothers (spin off from Nomeansno), The Ex, Melt Banana, The Handsome Family and loads more.

Semi Lunar & Lobby Promotions present:
    Ron Sexsmith

    Sunday 27th July @ 9pm

Just when you thought the last vaguely melancholic singer-songwriter had done warbling, a rare specimen emerges from St Catherine's, Ontario, and what a fine fellow he is. Sexsmith looks like a tousle-haired 12-year-old and sings like Jackson Browne's kid cousin. In fact, he's 31 and has lived through lean, hungry times while labouring at his craft. How happy he must be now, though, for his songs are of a consistently high quality. Sexsmith explores thoughts and feelings; he may not venture too deeply, but goes far enough to let you know he's been there.

For the foot courier turned singer/songwriter, his distinctive sound began to take shape in 1991 on the independently released Grand Opera Lane, followed by a trio of acclaimed Mitchell Froom-produced albums - 1995's self-titled major label debut, 1997's Other Songs and 1999's Whereabouts - and last year's much-praised Blue Boy. While his songs have already been recorded by a wide range of artists, from Rod Stewart to Curtis Stigers, and opera singer Anne Sophie Van Otter, Sexsmith saw the fruits of a milestone collaboration with Glenn Tilbrook appear last year on the Squeeze star's solo outing, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook.

Returning to the road in support of Cobblestone Runway while remaining ever in tune to his songwriter's antennae, Sexsmith continues to grow and discover more than a decade after his debut. "I just feel that I've seen a lot of huge-selling albums or artists disappear off the face of the earth," he says. "So I feel very fortunate and yeah, I think I'm singing better than ever now and the songs... they keep coming. So I still feel like I'm coming in to my own."

“Ron Sexsmith's a real talent, a rare talent, and his album is a little treasure” – Q

Out of the old ashes sizzle and scream a new wave realisation called Melt Banana. A maelstrom of experimental heart surgery, Melt Banana walk on water. They effortlessly juggle all of those sharks that think they're swimming in new, unexplored territories.

Melt Banana is made up of two ladies and two fellas that hail from Tokyo's ferocious underground. They sweat out a super-adrenalized, maxi-caffeinated collision of frenzied drum rhythms and torturous guitar squeals through tiny, frantic, hyper-rhythmic little songs.

They have just released their new album "Cell-Scape" on their own record label (A-Zap Records) to tremendous acclaim from the alternative music press.

Probably due to the little known fact that Cork City was a former Japaneese colony. Their influences can be seen all over the city if you look hard enough ;)

She embodies ghostly voices wailing to be heard from the other side - voices of
tormented souls stumbling through Civil War swamps, fighting in Indian rebellions, lamenting the loss of love and hoping for a better world to come. That is the landscape that singer-songwriter Oh Susanna (aka Suzie Ungerleider) can conjure at the drop of a lyric and the pluck of a doomed chord. Growing up in a family obsessed with music , she spent her youth rummaging through folkways records, attending festivals at Jericho Beach and slam dancing at all-ages punk shows held in the warehouses of Vancouver. In 1997, she caught the attention of US and Canadian press/ radio and record labels and has since released two highly acclaimed albums to date. Oh Susanna has just released her third album entitled "Oh Susanna" on Hot Records.

Twisted Nerve was founded in late 1997 by Grand Central DJ and designer Andrew Shallcross (aka Andy Votel) and singer-songwriter Damon Gough (aka Badly Drawn Boy). The label was originally inspired by a wide range of alternative influences such as one off soul records, french EPs, a cottage industry, a rebellion to dance music, making something out of nothing, hip hop, b-grade US psych bands, breaking down musical boundries, jukebox records, pushing your luck, music and design in unison, Woody Allen and manufacturing singles in Nashville, Tennessee. Andy and Damon didn't want to set up a business. They wanted to make five hundred 7" records with cheap two colour sleeves and sell them to their friends before the end of the year. They sold the records in less than a month and soon after got embraced, mithered and intimidated by the music industry. They then got another record made and proceeded to put out records by our like-minded friends and then they became a record company, made films, designed graphics and organised events.

Taking their name from characters in the hockey film Slapshot, The Hanson Brothers are a hockey-themed side project of musician brothers Rob and John Wright, the founders and principle members of the acclaimed Vancouver, Canada-based group Nomeansno. Using the names Robbie (bass) and Johnny (vocals) Hanson, the Wright brothers perform with anonymous musicians Tommy Hanson (guitar) and Kenny Hanson (drums), often dressed in full hockey gear, singing humorous punk melodies about hockey, beer, Canada and life in general - a sort of "Mackenzie brothers gone bad" situation.

Many more shows to be confirmed/announced so stay tuned. _

    SHANE MCGOWAN & THE POPES
    SUPPORT GAVIN MOORE

    LIVE AT THE SAVOY THEATRE
    FRIDAY 25TH JULY 2003
    DOORS: 08.30
TICKETS : €28.50 AVAILABLE FROM THE BODEGA, PLUG’D RECORDS.

Shane was born on Christmas Day in Kent, when his parents were visiting relatives. They lived in Puckhaun, county Tipperary, Ireland. His mother was a great singer and traditional dancer and had worked as a model in Dublin. His father was very interested in literature and writing. They lived in a big farmhouse with until Shane was six, when they moved to London. In 1971 he got a schoolarship and was accepted into a top public school. Shane was caught in posession of drugs and was kicked out after a year. One of his friends at the time was Berni France, later in The Popes. In 1976 he sawThe sex Pistols and became part of the punk movement. The same year he made the papers for the first time. He was up front at a Clash gig and a girl cut him in the side of the head with a broken bottle. Someone took a photo and the picture of him covered in blood made the papers. They
wrote that he had got his ear bitten off and that turned Shane into a semi-legend at the time.

Shane, who had rechristened himself Shane O'Hooligan, worked in a record store. He created his own fanzine called "Bondage" and formed the group Nipple Erectors with his friend Shanne Bradley (later in The Men They Couldn't Hang.). Their first single was "King Of The Bop" (1976) and it was produced by Stan Brennan, Shane's employer in the record store. They changed their name to The Nips and recorded three more singles. The line-up was changing all the time and included guitarist James Fearnley (later in The Pogues) and drummer Jon Moss (later in Culture Club). They were support acts for The Clash and The Jam. Paul Weller of The Jam liked them a lot and produced the single "Happy Song". The Nips broke up at the end of 1980 and released a live album called "Only The End Of The Beginning".

At the same time as Shane was in The Nips he also played guitar in another punkband called The Millwall Chainsaws which featured, on vocals, Spider Stacy. Shane and his friend Jem Finer were also involved in a backing band for a school teacher. Shane played bass, Jem guitar and Ollie Watts from The
    Millwall Chainsaws was the drummer.

The Millwall Chainsaws became the prototype to what was going to be Pogue Mahone (and later became The Pogues). In spring 1981, inspired by The Dubliners, they renamed themselves The New Republicans. Shane was the leadsinger and they played one gig at Richard Strange's club Cabaret Futura. The audience started pelting them with chips, so the management pulled the
plugs thinking the band was from the IRA.

Shane began writing new songs like "Streams Of Whiskey" and he and Jem began rehersing together in 1981. They tried busking, but they didn't do well. In Covent Garden a man told them: "Very few people have come here and failed what we like to call The Covent Garden Seal Of Quality. I'm sorry, you have failed."

Shane and Jem auditioned their neighbour, Andrew Ranken, on drums, but he was the singer in another group and did not have the time to participate in another project. Shane remembered that the former Nips guitarist had taken piano lessons, so he was roped in an the accordion and showed up on James
Fearnley's doorstep, the accordion in a landry bag. Jem learned to play the banjo and John Hasler on drums completed the line-up. A few nights before their first gig Shane phoned Spider and asked him if wanted to come a long. The group didn't have a name and among the suggestions were The Men They Couldn't Hang and The Noisy Boysies. Spider then came up with Pogue Mahone, gaelic for "kiss my arse", and it stuck.

Pogue Mahone's first gig was at The Pindar Of Wakefield on October the 4th 1982. The day after Shane also managed to find a bass player. It was Cait O'Riordan, who he had met a few years ago when she bought a Nips record from the record shop he was working in. John Hasler was sacked from the band and
temporary they used different drummers including Alec Palao from The Sting-rays. In March 1983 Shane and Jem's original choice Andrew Ranken became a permanent member.

Shane's days with The Pogues ended in November 1991 during a tour in Japan. His story and the band's story differ on whether he quit or was sacked (although one source blamed Yoko Ono). Following his departure from The Pogues, Shane recorded a duet version of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" together with Nick Cave for Christmas 1992. In 1993 he collaborated with the Breton singer Alan Stivell (of The Specials) and the French band Soldat Louis. Shane also formed a new band with Mo O'Hagan (guitar) and Berni France (bass) called The London Contemporary Five. He opened the next year performing at the Brit Awards singing "Gloria" together with Van Morrison.

Shane appeared on The Jesus & Mary Chain's album "Stoned & Dethroned". He also recorded his first solo album called "The Snake" and his backing band was now called The Popes. Their first single "The Church Of The Holy Spook" was only released in 10.000 ex. The picture on the cover, a crucified Shane, caused a lot of trouble. The second single was "That Woman's Got Me Drinking" also got a lot of attention because actor and teen idol Johnny Depp played guitar on it and also appeared in the video. The album was a mix of traditional Irish music and rock 'n' roll and was produced by The Pogues' old sound technician Dave Jordan together with Shane. Among the guests were Jem Finer, Spider Stacey, guitarist Brian Robertson (formerly of Thin Lizzy) and John Sheahan and Barney McKenna (of The Dubliners). In addition to Mo and Berni, The Popes are: Tom MacAnimal (banjo), Paul McGuiness (guitar),
Danny Heatley (drums) and Colm O'Manolaí (whistle). After the record was finished O'Manolaí was replaced by Paul Conlon (whistle), who only lasted until 1995. John Myers (whistle, fiddle) then became a Pope.

In 1994 Christy Moore sang a duet of the traditional "Spancil Hill" with Shane on Irish TV. Shane then recorded two duets with Sinead O'Connor and Marie Brennan (of Clannad). The first one was a re-recording of The Pogues' song "Haunted" (which appeared only on the "Sid & Nancy" soundtrack and on a
7" & 12" single), and the new version appeared in the film "Two if by Sea". The second, "You're The One" was used in the film "Circle Of Friends" and was a collaboration between Shane and former Pink Floyd member Michael Kamen, who composed the soundtrack. Both were released as singles and a second version of "The Snake" with the new tracks included was released in the US and Europe.

Sadly, in 1995 producer Dave Jordan died of a heart attack in Paris.

In 1996 Shane sang Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in a Nike commercial. The Popes got a new member in Kerina (accordion, whistle). Shane also appeared at The Pogues' final gig. Berni France (bass) left The Popes and was replaced by
Bob Dowling. Shane began recording and co-producing a new album with Brian Robertson. He released the single "Chritsmas Party E.P. '96" in November. The next year he recorded "An Irish Airman Forsees His Death" for a tribute album to the Irish poet W.B. Yeats called "Now And In Time to Be".

Another single, "Lonesome Highway", will be released in spring 1997 with an album in the summer. His long time girlfriend Victoria Clarke has written a biography about him and it will also be published some time in 1997.

    This thread officially sucks now.

Seriously now, can we do something about it ?

Theres dates all over the place. The best thing is to have a thread with dates in chronological order and edit them when the concerts are over

Its too noisy and spammy to see whats fresh and whats old.

    PROMO REVIEWS
Musically, these guys are obviously trying to make a statement for the future of house music and all signs are pointing deep. The A1 mix is a groovy vocal house cut with a slight Latin vibe permeating both the percussion and hornplay, while the flip kicks it downtempo style for a lounge set. On the second disc, the pace is picked up for an Afro-groove styled vocal cut backed with a fantastic deep and dubby reggae-styled mix that's got DJ versatility, but keeps it deep. Fans of the Siesta and Bluem sounds of old might have a bit of a shock here, but make no mistake: The sound might be different, but the quality remains the same." - On "Swing While The Band's Still Swinging".....primalrecords.com

"No idea who these animated producers are, but as usual, David Duriez shows his A&R ability, signing up this excellent outing from them. The standout cut here is "Time Changes", with its compacted claps, amazing bluesy vocals, heaven sent adlib sax and jazz club styled live bass rumblings. "First To Break" sees a sultry acoustic guitar accompany yearning breaks, questioning and strings that appear and disappear on an organic ride. ." - pitchadjust.com [Rating: 5/5]

"moving deep house beats and some pleasant keys wandering with a fantastic electric guitar section that would have Santana dribbling..." - Untitledmusic.co.uk

"Soulful and deep jazzy based vocal numbers with live instrumentation and a good laidback, late night vibe. " - substrata.com.

Seriously now, can we do something about it ?

Theres dates all over the place. The best thing is to have a thread with dates in chronological order and edit them when the concerts are over

Its too noisy and spammy to see whats fresh and whats old.

I usually go to www.entertainment.ie/music/contents.asp You can then select all the gigs going on in Cork. I'm sure there is a Perl guru out there who could write a script or something to give us a list on these boards.

    TRISKEL ARTS CENTRE
    presents
    CRASH ENSEMBLE
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Friday 19 September, 8.00pm, €14.00

Triskel Arts Centre is delighted to welcome one of Ireland’s most innovative performing groups, Crash Ensemble. Crash Ensemble will bring together musicians, composers, video artists, choreographers and lighting designers, to create a dazzling mix of contemporary music and multimedia works. This performance will review the ensemble’s most popular pieces as part of a national tour.

Embarking on their first nationwide tour, Crash Ensemble will perform a programme of favourites from their repertoire, ranging from the hard-edged urban styles of Donnacha Dennehy’s Glamour Sleeper and David Lang’s Cheating, Lying and Stealing, to the austere Ice Etchings of Deirdre McKay and the dazzling virtuosity of Magnus Lindberg’s Ur.

Alongside these ensemble works are four solo pieces: the high energy Ik-Ook of Philip Glass (electronic keyboard) and Sole Injection of Zack Browning (amplified violin), along with the monumentally distorted Industry of Michael Gordon (cello) and the Irish premiere of a junk metal celebratory tour-de-force, Paddy, a solo percussion piece by Donnacha Dennehy.

“Bringing our particular repertoire and style to new audiences is an exciting prospect, and I hope the beginning of a new era of regular Crash performances throughout Ireland. In its short history since 1997, Crash Ensemble has developed a reputation for excellence and innovation in presenting new music in an upbeat, downtown type of way, and our blend of live music making with electronics, presented in innovative ways has captured the imagination of many.”

    Fergus Sheil

    Director, Crash Ensemble

Crash Ensemble play Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, Friday 19 September.
