Anybody any idea if the bingo is still on in the community centre of a Monday night?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,079 ✭✭✭RiderOnTheStorm

Bingo has moved, and is now in the Tintean Theatre on Monday at 8pm.

Hi guys. I have some friends coming down from Dublin who were hoping to camp and surf. I was hoping to bring them to Ballybunion for both, I was certain there was a campsite somewhere around, but no sign of any. Nothing online either. Do they exist? I've asked a few people and it generally results in much head-scratching and thoughtful chin rubbing but little else.

    Thanks a million.

    Damo.

    Hi Damo,

on the surfing front, you are sorted. there are 2 surf schools (if you or buddies need brushing up) and the waves are great at the moment, and there are a couple of beaches to choose from , with great access to them too.

However there are no official camp sites here, for tents anyway. There are often camper vans / VW campers / big jeeps that park overnight, and there are a couple of unofficial spots where they are safe & welcome . First to mind is Rinn Bhui (Yellow Point). Its a mobile home park, but has a large green area that campers often park in. I will PM you the managers phone number and you can give him a ring and see if its ok for you to camp there. I dont think there is electricity / water for 'campers' there, but there are public toilets nearby, and always the Leisure Centre for a hot shower!

GPS of Riunn Bhui (so you can have a look) 52.509427 -9.679915

I passed through Ballyb recently - first time in years. I didn't stop because the place just feels so unwelcoming.

    Good golf courses though.

I am sorry to hear that Henry. We know Ballyb is not perfect, and like every other town in Ireland we have our issues. But I think we are always worth stopping for. You never know who you will meet or what you will see. Sometimes it is worth the effort to go look for adventure!

Hope you stop next time you are passing :-)

    Unwelcoming in what respect?

Lots of weather here lately ....

Sunny & Warm with calm seas
    Super Moons - 10% bigger & brighter
Very low tides - could walk out past the cliffs. Couldnt quite walk to Nuns beach, but got to see the cliffs from the bottom!
Northern Lights - they may be visable from Kerry this evening . Quite possible to see them further north on the island.

And Listowel races are to start this weekend. Starting on Sunday instead of usual Monday. They will run Sun to Sat (instead of Mon to Sun) . Hopefully splitting it over 2 weekend will bring more folk and encourage them to stay longer.

One September a few years ago you could drive around the cliffs, the tide was that low

And a special shout-out to my friend Dermot, who is attempting to swim 34km in the pool today. He reckons it will take 12 hours. When I was there @ 10am he had done 9k ..... so far so good! If you are around, drop in and give some encouragement. Ta.

Fair play to him! Would love to make it out to support, but heading up to Limerick today. Best of luck to him though. Also, is there any significance to the 34 km? Just seems like a random figure to go with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,079 ✭✭✭RiderOnTheStorm

Well, our true legend, Dermot, DID the 34k! He swam well into the evening, but managed it. Bet he is sore now!

The significance of the 34k is this: Dermot teaches a swim club, and over the summer he told them that he would equal all the lengths that they did, in total. So that cam out as 1719 lengths .... just over 34k .... thats 21.25 miles in old money!!

If you want to give a donation to Dermots effort (in aid of the local kids swim club), please drop a few quid into the leisure centre.

Conservation Specialists have begun work on the Castle Walls. It's in need of a little T.L.C and now it is getting it. However, it seems the window at the top will not be re-installed. It looks like its just basic repairs and redoing the pointing.

Our Indian Summer seems to be over .... weather is getting wet & dull, so normality has returned!

Up-side is that the waves are great!!
