some friends of mine fed a dog that had been hanging around our street for a few days. She looked underfed and as though he'd been mistreated. She's improved a bit since then and is now a temporary resident in their shed. They contacted an animal shelter (not sure where) but they can't collect her for a week.
Would really love if someone was willing to give her a good home and some badly needed tlc. Would really hate for such a lovely dog end up getting a fast ticket to doggy heaven.
Please pm me if you know anyone interested in adopting this lovely dog.
She's a brown greyhound. She looks to be about a year old. She may even have been stolen from her owner as she is wearing a collar but there are no details on it.

Heya OP, get onto www.paws.ie, or better still, give them a ring and let them know what's going on. They specialise in rehoming greyhounds and lurchers, probably your best bet. Please please don't send her to the pound, the pounds are already bursting at the seams with greyhounds, she won't stand a chance. What could also do is get her along to a local veterinary surgery, they will scan her for a chip. Does she have any tattoos in her ears? If she doesn't, she's probably a lurcher as most pedigree greyhounds are tattoo'd.
Good luck with her, the paws phone number is on the website.

Not too keen on sending her to the pound either. She's very smelly though and seems to have sores on her skin. Think it might be mange. Is it a good idea to bring her to the vet if she might have a skin condition or should i see if they would call out.
Really upsets me to see an animal like that and would hate to see her put down.

You'd be as well to bring her down to the vet, very few of them will do a call out if its not an emergency. If its mange, its easily treated, some antibiotics and a parasitacide should do the trick. The vet can scan her for a chip while she's there. She could have very easily have come from a local halting site either... greyhounds and lurchers are often used as lamping / hunting dogs. Let me know what happens, I have 2 greyhounds myself and I have an awful soft spot for them... hate to think of one in need of help. Give Gina from paws a call, she might be able to suggest something... tell her Rebecca told you to ring :)

Drove her (now called Gill) out to the lovely lady in paws. we decided dog needed a trip to vet because she was in such bad condition. She's spending the night there and then she's going to paws. She's more than likely gonna get to travel abroad too as they rehouse loads of their dogs in europe. Nice to have a happy ending as i doubt this poor dog had much of a life up until now. Its horrific what some people will do to an animal! thanks for all the help :)

Just a thought for anyone reading this who is thinking of getting a rescue dog. I have had many different dogs over the years & had never considered a Greyhound. I ended up with one by accident & I now realise just how much I have missed out on. She is the most wonderful, attentive, adorable dog - asleep on my lap as I type this. I could not imagine life in the future without a Greyhound so please bury any preconceptions & consider giving one a home.

That's great news OP, credit where credit's due! Lots of other people would have just turfed her back out to where you found her, now because of you she's on the road to recovery and the chance of a great new home!
I totally agree Discodog, they are fab dogs, I'll always have a greyhound now. I've had my big guy for about 4 1/2 years and the bitch for over three, and they are brilliant! I'm just in from another late mucky walk, they couldn't be happier!

So glad she is in good hands now. Apparently she was a bag of bones when she turned up at my friends house. She has put on some weight in the past few days however. Most of her hair is missing on one side, and her face and rear were covered in sores. The poor thing stank to high heaven too!Was worried about putting her in the car in case she got agitated but she was so placid. She'll make a great pet for someone!
Never realised how much of a raw deal so many of these dogs get. Will definitely be a first choice for me when i am in a position to look after one properly! Could not get over how timid she was...... a good deal easier to handle than my mums crazy shih tzu!

A big thumbs up to the people in PAWS!!! Thanks again for the advice!

It's a fantastic feeling to see a Greyhound when it is restored to full health & confidence. My girl never carries her tail between her legs - it's always wagging !. Even the vet was surprised at her confidence. It may take some effort to win their trust but it is so worthwhile. Be advised mine can be as wonderfully mad as a bag of frogs then follows up with the most adorable affection. And to think that I used to suppose that greyhounds must be a bit boring - no way !

I have been thinking of getting a greyhound myself. The shelter that I have been volunteering in has two but they are going to new homes in Sweden soon. Good for them, sad for me!:D
They really are fabulous dogs and have an awful time here in Ireland with the people who race and breed them. They are so gentle and really are beautiful looking dogs, although ya could point me in the direction of the maddest looking mut in the world and I'd still think he/she was a dote!!
