I had looked for ages for this man in the census and couldn't find him. I assumed he must have died or emigrated. Then I went through all the same surnames - eventually found him. He had entered his name as Robt instead of Robert and of course it was transcribed exactly as written. You would think I would have thought of…

He had entered his name as Robt instead of Robert and of course it was transcribed exactly as written. You would think I would have thought of this as I've been doing this for donkey's years now. My husband says my brain is addled and I think he might be right. Anyway thought I'd pop this here for any newbies it might help. Not only different spellings but short versions of first names such as: Robt - Robert; Jn - John; Jas - James, etc.

As a last resort, its also worth switching the surname and forename in the search as a number of census forms were completed that way incorrectly.
