Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Hi, I have a new build house & the back, is about 6 x 18metres, running parallel to the house. I want to make this a play area for my small kids, but I've been told grass wont grow there as its northfacing & only catches the sun up till lunchtime. Grass would be ideal for the kids, paving would be too hard. Is there any variety that doesn't need a lot of sun? Finally, as its a new build, I only have compressed subsoil & stone there at the mo, which doesnt allow for great soakage. Any ideas to get around this...on a budget! Not asking much, am I!!!!:D

    North facing, poor drainage and no topsoil ??
    It's like you designed the worst possible conditions to have a lawn... :rolleyes:

    If you put in drainage, import topsoil and go for a hard wearing (no.3 I think) lawn seed you will be able to grow grass..

    It will be important however that since it's shaded and north facing that you get the rest of the conditions (drainage and good topsoil) as best you can to have the best chance possible... Moss will probably be a problem though if its sheltered..

    When you stripped back the site where did the topsoil go ? It should have been cleared off to one side for landscaping afterwards ??
